Fast idle could be a vacuum leak , start checking for leaks , I have seen a vacuum leak through the brake booster with a bad booster so diconnect that too

:iagree:Definitely sounds like a vacuum leak. And the timing sounds like it is definitely off as well.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The voltage regulator is mounted normally. At least it is the same as mine. As for the electronic ignition module, it mounts on the firewall passenger side, just to the left of the regulator. Mine is mounted on a stand off bracket that spaces it about 1/2" off of the firewall.
I have an extra bracket if you end up looking for one.  Daves70 has his mounted the same way you describe.

All of my other parts (plug wires, new carb gasket in case I need one, and orange ignition module) came in this week, so I should be able to work on it tonight.  What purpose does the standoff bracket do ?  And is there anyone who can post a picture of this bracket with the module on it in relation to where it is on the firewall ?  I can't see how it would fit on my car, but I have an A/C car which puts more hoses in that area, so maybe that is why you need a bracket to make a larger mounting surface.

Tonight, I'm going to just put it back in the original location until I determine if I should move it.  I also bought the Mopar Performance wiring harness for it too just to be sure.

Finally, a book that I ordered on Cuda/Challenger restorations is on long-term backorder.  If anyone knows of a restoration guide, please let me know.

Thanks again for all of the input.

This website, and the member's projects, are far better than any book I've seen.  Search, ask, learn.

Very, very true. Many Mopar books have lots of misinformation. If it's written by Paul Herd, it would be useful for kindling or emergengy toilet paper.

Blue boxes were available in the 80's  and known for there problems :working:

I think the stand off bracket just allows the unit to cool faster.

Just an update, and yes it has been awhile, but after replacing the plug wires, the car runs like a top. The only thing I found, and I swear I checked this multiple times, was the #8 plug wire was not connected to anything.  The firing order was correct, so the only thing was that either the wires were shorting each other out, or the dead cylinder was somehow firing whenever it wanted to.

the stand off braket for the ECU also moves the ECU away from the firewall to prevent an water running down the firewall from getting into the ECU

Double check your firing order, crossed wires can wreak havoc....Don't ask me how I know.

This mark is at Top Dead Center,TDC,  To the left each mark is 1-degree Before Top Dead Center, BTDC.

Oh man you just saved my ass with this one.  After doing some alternator wiring I reconnected the spark plugs with 2/4 reversed.  Some backfiring in the right tailpipe as I left the drive and I knew it was time to turn him around and figure out what was wrong.

Thanks for posting these!
