Trunk won't stay open
« on: November 30, 2009 - 08:11:56 PM »
My trunk won't stay open. There is a spring on the lower left side connected to the floor. Is there supposed to be a bar or something connecting the spring to the trunk lid to keep it open?

ive never seen a spring.
could it be a "rod" that spans the trunk area?
youll see a series of adjustment holes in the one side, and a spot for the opposite side to rest in as well.
heres some pics.

The spring on the left side of the floor is for the jack. I also have one, with no jack.
The torsion spring in the pictures is how you adjust the trunk lid tension. I have a spoiler, so the tension needs to be higher.
I've never adjusted it, so wouldnt know which way to adjust it, or even how, though I assume you can pry it out of its slot and slide it over. Probably easier said than done.

to adjust you do pry the end out of the slot & move it towards the rear of the car to add pressure , Definatly Not as easy as it looks , you have to do it very carefully

70's had torsion rods on both sides, so here is a pic of my passenger's side being adjusted. You need a big screw driver or some sort of rod. Pull towards the rear of the car to tighten...Just beware that baby is going to want to fly towards the front of the car.

so...the more secure leverage you have the better, and knowing which way it wants to spring beforehand is helpful

THey may have made a mid year change back to 2 bars in 71.  At some point in 71 they also went to the newer location for the shock access hole.  Some cars have it in the 70 location and others are on the side like 72-74.

Make sure you also get the nylon guides that ride on the hinges.

Two things...

Easiest way, loop a piece of rope or something around the hook.  Pull it out and over to the next slot.

DO NOT DO THIS WHILE LAYING IN YOUR TRUNK.  You will have a panic attack when it fails.  Ask me how.  :misbehaving:
