carb for a stock 440
« on: December 02, 2009 - 09:30:35 AM »
I have a stock 440 I'm putting in my car (70 challenger).  The engine came out of a motor home (1977 or 78).  I have replaced the intake, Holley Street dominator, aluminum water pump housing, will be using headers also, trying to keep weoight down a bit).  What is the best carb for this?  I have heard different stories.  Also money is getting to be an issue (spent alot more than originally planned, I know).  I am going to drive it, not alot but not going to sit in the garage.  What is my best option?  I was thinking of a double pumper with mechanical secondaries.  Thanks, Danny

Isn't that a lot of carb for a stocko 440?

I'd have thought a Holley 750vac would be right.
That's what I use on my mild 440.

I got the Proform 850DP with the choke on my somewhat hopped up 440 now. I LOVE it.   :2thumbs:

Reading this thread makes me seem inadequate.   :eek7:

Just learning here, why choose the race series over the street series?

Holley 750 is Perfect with vac secondaries. Holley double pumper for 4-speeds.
Small blocks should use a 600 or 650 Holley.  Just 30 years of playing with them all. :2cents:

I have been told to use a carter or edlebrock.  Holleys didn't do as well but I have no clue.  I do appreciate all the info guys.  My car is coming along quite nice.  Getting ready for the paint, that is if I can make up my mind as to the color.  It was originally burnt orange with burnt orange interior.  Am going  with black interior.

Mancinis has the best price on the Proform carbs
the way I look at it the 340 & 440 both used 1000 cfm 6 packs & improved the performance + after years of doing this the 750 is too small for a 440
