I would use the Proform 850 cfm race series
Just learning here, why choose the race series over the street series?
Bump
Is the choke the only difference?

Thanks CP. Just working out a winter parts buying budget. I think I'll be picking up a proform carb to replace my Holley 3310.

Saw some pics of Calgary last night after the Montreal-Boston game. You guys are gettin' hammered. (weatherwise) :22yikes:

For what its worth I use a 750 choker (stock jets) on the combo below and it runs great.  I don't race it, have no idea what it runs in 1/4 but the throttle response is great and it accelerates all the way to 6K w/o any (noticable)drop off.  I thought about going bigger but am afraid to change this out.  Am I missing something....do I need to be running 1/4's to notice any difference between my carb and a Proform 850?

Dan,

Believe it or not, I always had you in the back of my feeble mind with your 750. I had a Holley 800 on my car originally. When I upgraded to the Holley Street Dominator intake with a Proform 850, it was quite a difference. Not in everyday driving, but when I was on the Hiway and nailed it, I honestly had the Kung-Fu grip on my steering wheel because I thought the front end was coming up on me.    :scared:

There is no Spell Check. We pretty much put up with each others spelling errors.    :grinyes:

Someday I'll go ahead and buy one...if its a big a difference as you say.  A 750 choker to an 850 Proform should make an even bigger difference.  I forget your motor specs but I would guess its similar to mine?

I guess the point is a 440 will run great with a 750 or the factory 600 Holley or even a 2 bbl carb
the reality is not that it will run poorly but how much power are you not taking advantage of with a small carb ?
the 440 came with the 600 for a few years then with the creation of the 6 pack it was added & the power rating was increased without changing cams , porting ther heads or using headers , then in the mid 70s the TQ was created & used on all 440s , the smallest TQ was 850 CFM & was also used on the 340/360 .
It took me a couple of years to convince MEK to install an 850 on his 440 & he will tell you it definatly made a big difference !!
the Factory used big carbs on a 440 so why everyone chooses to under carb them Beats Me but by under carbing the 440 you can easily lose out on 20HP + or a lot more .

I just happened to have done some carb swapping on a stock 440 as well as 496 stroker. On the 440, we went from a Holley 650 to a Holley 850 HP double pumper. It picked up 3 tenths in the 1/4 without sacrificing any driveability. Fuel mileage probably dropped a little, but the increase in power was worth it to the owner.
On the stroker, we went from a 6-pak setup to a Victor intake with a 1050 dominator. The car loved the change and it went from a best of 11.77 down to a 10.95 with no other changes. These big blocks breath and like the extra cfm. You have to work to over carb one imho. You can do it, but you would have to go way too big.
My recommendation would be an 850 cfm Holley or Proform double pumper. Spend a little time dialing it in and you with be well pleased.    :2cents:

Depends on what you want from it. If your GF or kid drives the car sometimes maybe the 600 cfm carb wasn't that bad of a pick.

I switch from Holley to dual Carters / does the motor make more power--too close for me to really say but for sure cold running is much better and it was so nice to be able to go limping home yesterday at 30 mph since  somebody drop me off at the shop and I needed to go slow so they could follow me. Motor ran so smooth running on the one 500 Carter.

Then later on I opened it up in 2nd gear and had enough power for around here to pull out in front from way behind.

I dump my headers for factory exhast manifolds-now yes I lost some power but the engine bay is much neater and easier to get to stuff like the starter..plus no more minor exhaust leaks..one leak I did have turn out to be a semi losse header pipe..likely be the last time I need to worry about exhaust leaks for a long long time.

On a side note I have hear for best power even a 850 on a small block makes the most power and a pro carb shop can set it up so low end power is good..just isn't cheap to do. Boosters and metering need to be custom set for the little motor.
