Need fitting for Auto Meter gauge?????
« on: December 05, 2009 - 08:37:55 AM »
I've got the Auto Meter #5731 Water Temp. Gauge, but I can't find a fitting to adapt it to the SMALL hole in my Edelbrock Air Gap intake.
I ordered the Auto Meter 3/8'' adapter, it's too big.
The pic shows the plug that came out of the intake. Does anybody have an adapter that will get the #5731 gauge in this small hole???

It has to have the tapered top to accept the #5731 probe.

Which edelbrock intake? There are no plugged holes you can use? Kinda last resort is a hose adapter, the braided line kit may have the right fitting. But I do think the electrical gauge has a small sender that will fit if you can't find a fitting for your mechanical. I'd imagine there to be another port however in the manifold.

I've got the Air Gap intake. I like the one that goes inline on the hose. Where can I get that?
I'm pretty sure you're right, the electrical would fit. I have everything installed now for the mechanical. I'd prefer not to remove it and return it

Are you sure it won't fit? I just looked at the Edelbrock web site to see the intake and it looks like a 3/8 NPT fitting? Maybe run a tap down, but not too deep. ( if you have one? ) Does the red fitting even start in the hole?

There  is no reason why the fitting you have won't fit, unless you are using both 3/8" npt ports (for???) One will go to the heater hose nipple, and the other will either be blocked off, or you install your sending unit there and leave the stock (small) one there.

3/8" npt taps are kinda tough to find and pricey. Get a smooth start, thats the right thread

The holes on each side of the t-stat are 3/8" npt.

The red 3/8'' fitting will not fit in the hole that the plug was in. The plug might fit in the heater hose hole, but that still leaves me with a problem.....
I should have brought the camera with me when I went to work on the car. Some close up pictures would have been good. This is a picture that gives you some idea of the hole/plug size.

what is this fitting and why is it there? does the autometer fitting on the tubing not fit without that fitting in the manifold. The fitting in the manifold is 3/8" npt, the autometer fitting is 3/8"npt, there is no reason (besides messed up threads) why they wont go in. NPT threads are tapered so it will get tougher after a couple threads, thats how they seal...

I got a 1/4NPTx 3/8 barbed fitting to go in the left port since it is a 1/4NPT and the far right is 3/8NPT.....

brads70,
THANK YOU for the offer, but I think I've got a plan B that will work........If I tap it, I'd have to remove the manifold to avoid getting the aluminum filings in the water, wouldn't I???
If plan B does not work, I'll PM you. Again, THANK YOU!

GoodysgotaCuda,
The fitting/plug you point out in the picture is the one shown in my picture next to a 3/8'' Auto Meter fitting. As you can see in my picture, the plug is about 1/8'' smaller than the 3/8'' Auto Meter fitting.
When I spoke to the guys at Auto Meter, they said that some of the MOPAR intakes have a smaller  1/4'' NPT hole. They recommend the electric gauge for this deal. I don't know if this is an old intake or what. But the 3/8'' fitting will not fit in the hole.

I sure appreciate you guys taking the time to help, THANKS!!!

Just put the Water temp sender in the 3/8 hole and get a new Heater hose barb from the hardware store for a couple bucks.  Most SB have the Heater hose on the left side from what I've seen anyways.

I'm going to tap it to 3/8'', we'll remove the thermostat and stick the shop vac in there. The manifold is dry. We should be able to keep the junk out of there. My buddies got the tap, now all I need is a 9/16'' bit and a very steady hand!

The fitting the tubing is in it the picture IS 3/8" PIPE THREAD!  :faint:

1) I'm not sure why you are so concerned with getting your sending unit into the "small hole". Just leave the sending unit there, or find the right size plug for it. Problem solved...
2) The threads next to the small hole are 3/8" NPT (pipe thread) already.
3) The red fitting is the WRONG fitting. It is 5/8" UNF, not the 3/8" NPT you need.
As stated on their site - http://autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=67
4) This is the CORRECT fitting; 3/8NPT extension
http://autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=47

I don't think I can make that any clearer.  :faint: If you tap anything, make sure it is a pipe thread tap, and not a regular 3/8-16 (or fine thread) bolt tap. You'll have the wrong threads again, and a hole in the manifold you probably can't seal very well. Just order the correct extension...

Trying to help, just hope you can listen and try not to ruin your manifold!
