Gasket Sealer for Sending Unit
« on: December 06, 2009 - 12:36:31 PM »
I just got done taking out my sending unit to replace sinking float.  Last time I had it out, about 2 years ago to replace the filter sock, it leaked a little so I used jb weld to stop the slight leak.  It worked GREAT but was a B*&^ch to dig out to get the lock ring off this time.  Is there any RTV type gasket sealer that will hold up to contuinued contact with gas that will last and be easier to dia-assemble in the future?  Even though I have a new gasket and lock ring coming with the new float I know how finakey these can be.  Thanks

Isn't the gasket under the lock ring a O-Ring.  I thought it was and wouldn't need any sealer at all. :2cents:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Shouldn't need any.  If it leaks it's not in correctly, and you can just re-seat it.

:iagree:  Shouldn't need sealant.  I've heard that some new lock rings don't work as well as the old ones.  Should have a flat rubber circular gasket.

Although there is a sock, I would worry about any sealant that might find it's way into the tank.

You can try bending the tabs on the seal ring a little to try and get a tighter fit.

I have a new tank with the Year One pickup and the factory setup works perfect with no extra sealer. The best sealer I have ever tried (and it stays soft) is called "The Right Stuff" and it is the right stuff but costs $24 for a half caulking gun tube. Whether it is imperveous to gasoline I cannot say.

This says it all. Check for an incorrect bend in the lock ring...

should be a flat gasket, make sure it is in the proper spot as it has room to move around.

I always use a new gasket, I smear very small amount of either rubber grease or brake fluid on seal, then install, never had a leak.   :2thumbs:
Old seals usually swell or distort and don't work a second time. I noticed back in the 60's that all seals I took out had swelled up helping to seal better.

Someone posted either on here or on Moparts just recently that they had a leaking problem too.  Someone reported that the new gaskets are thinner than the origonals and not providing a good tight seal.

I have a new lock ring and gasket coming with the float.  In the past, I've had issues whenever I opened up an old tank.  I used to use wheel bearing grease to hold gasket, I like the idea of a little brake fluid to help swell the seal.  I can't believe I'm the only one that has a hard time getting these to seal.

I have a new tank, new sending unit, lock ring and O-ring seal.  The way it "fell" together I would have to agree with you...the seal is too thin.
Can anyone recommend a supplier that sells a seal that is the correct diameter/thickness??
