Linkage help needed.......
« on: December 06, 2009 - 04:18:22 PM »
All my original brackets seem to have the linkage too close to the center of the motor. Maybe the carb is a bit wider......I have an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake and an 800 AVS Edelbrock carb.
You can see there are two problems I need help with.
1. The throttle cable comes up about 1'' short of where it needs to be.
2. The throttle cable looks to be off set, I think it should be out more toward the manifold so it makes a straight shot to the linkage.

I suspect there's a bracket that will solve these problems. Once again, I GREATLY appreciate any help!!!!

Is your car an original 4bbl or 2bbl carb engine?

The intake is much higher than the stock one, meaning the cable needs to be longer or the bracket needs to be higher to compensate. Second, you may have a 2bbl cable on top of that. Just as important as the throttle cable being long enough at idle, but you must make sure you are getting 100% throttle opening at the carb when your foot is on the floor as well.

I have a Lokar throttle and kickdown linkage setup, works flawless, takes a little time to setup, but is worth it when you start messing with different carbs and manifolds. It bolts to the driver's/rear most carb stud. The throttle cable is cut to length and has two separate adjustments. Throttle return spring is on the same mount and bolts to the lower part of the carb linkage.

Kinda hard to see, but this is how my engine used to look. I have a 650cfm AVS (same base carb) and Performer RPM intake (same height as the airgap).

(plus I noticed the vacuum port was plugged on your manifold, where are you getting the vacuum for your power brakes)

I would just build a steel link to extend the throttle cable out ,drill a hole at each end of a piece of steel long enogh to reach both & put a pin through the cable end

Yup I'm an expert at customizing stuff like that. Steel can work wonders if its stiff and strong. Check out how I did my dual carbs..before that it had a 4 bbl, I did replace the cable once when it  broke years ago but kept the factory housing and threaded the new cable in with some white lube.

Guess its hard to see and car is at the shop, I post some better ones tomorrow.

Ebay can be your friend, I am using a 4bbl cable holder..those brackets can bend too. I have some thick gauge sheet metal from a protype shop I used to work at...until those jobs went to Mexico.

Would big-block or \6 cables be longer than small block ones?

Looking good Glen.  :2thumbs:

this thread makes me wonder about my own linkage.  I went from a two barrel 318 to a 4 barrel Eldebrock as well.  so this weekend I will need to look ay my linkage to see if mine is opening the throttle all the way.  I thought so, when I installed it, but now I am.... :clueless: if it is or not.
