a833... what is my best option?
« on: December 06, 2009 - 08:09:57 PM »
What is my best option?

i plan to swap a 4sp into my 70 challenger,  i have almost all the parts i need.  The tranny i have is an a833 short tail housing, im not sure what it is out of.  Should i try to sell the tranny and find the correct one?  maybe find the parts to covert it to long shaft?  Where can i find info on the casting numbers?  I not sure what to do at this point, please help!

Short tail will be a real *****.  You should get the right trans with the correct tail housing...zip bang boom  and its installed

You want the right one for sure or the shifter will not be in the right spot. It sounds like you have one from an A body. Does it have a partial VIN on it?

The E & B body trans have two shifter mounting points, the A body trans only has one.

Those will not tell you anything about it.

Look for the VIN pad if it has one.

If you have the short tialshaft type it is out of an A or F body & will not fit your car
you need the B/E body style with 2 mounts as the E body uses the rear mount

That's "2 shifter mounts".

Yes, but you must have the correct size hole in your bell housing to fit the front bearing retainer, that is the largest dia.
The slip yoke that goes into the A833 is the same as the 727 auto, the 904 is too small. You might have to have a custom length tail shaft made.    :2thumbs:

the front brg retainer can be milled down to the more common 4.80" size but not the 4.35 diameter
