What headliner goes with leather interior?
« on: December 07, 2009 - 11:00:42 AM »
Hello all,

I'm in the process of gathering all the parts for my '71 project. In a 1971 'Cuda with leather interior, would it have the normal 'bowed' headliner, or the 'Gran Coupe' molded headliner with the overhead conselette? I recall reading once a while back that you would get the overhead consolette in 'Cudas with leather interior. The book included an interior shot of a HEMI 'Cuda set up this way. Just looking to confirm if this would be a correct combination. I may end up doing it this way anyways, but my curiosity is begging for the answer.

Thanks,
Paul

It would have an overhead console to be correct, but good luck locating the correct headliner. When I built my 71 cuda clone I kept the leather seats, but went with a standard bow headliner because I couldnt locate a good board headliner.

That's what I thought. I used to own a 1971 Gran Coupe. I bought the material to cover the backboard from Barnabas Kriss years ago. I figured on having a local high-end stereo shop make a backboard out of fiberglass. Provided I don't have the extreme luck of finding a good original backboard.

Thanks,
Paul

A quick follow up question:
I never paid much attention when at the shows. Is the A-pillar molding white or black with the white interiors?

Thanks,
Paul

I'm not so sure that the '71 'Cudas had the overhead console with the leather interior.  Don't the Gran Coupe's have a plunger switch in the door frame somewhere for the door ajar light in the console?  If your car does not have that switch I'd say it probably never had the overhead console.

To my knowledge the overhead consoles only came in Gran Coupes, and SE Challengers (and some RT's?) The door ajar switches are at the rear of the door jambs. I put an overhead console in my 72 car with a vinyl liner. Is fully functional.

Your data plate should have a code of C26, in addition to interior code of P5xx, P6xx or PRxx.  I believe those are the "Premium" interiors Cloth, Vinyl, and Leather that had the overhead console.  Also, not that this is definitive, but check for clips along the inside where the molded headliner would meet the interior trim above the side windows.  My Gran Coupe has them, but i have had several folks tell me theirs did not.
