Engine location inside the engine bay, center or not?
« on: December 08, 2009 - 07:16:05 AM »
Hi all,

I dropped the car over the engine last weekend and everything went smooth and seems to fit good. My only concern is that is the engine supposed to sit exactly in the middle of the the engine bay (sideways)? Mine is now sitting pretty noticeably closer to the passenger side fender. The hole on the k-member circled in the pic seems to be at the middle of the engine bay and as you can see the damper bolt is something like inch and half towards the passenger side at the moment.

I haven't tightened the motor mount bolts on the actual block yet (run out of time) and I think that I can use the slack in those to correct it bit but I'm unsure how center it should be. The actual insulator rubbers are tightened to the mounts and also to the k-member. If I recall right, there was not much play in those.

It also seems that it might be tilting bit to the passenger side also (could be caused by the angle of photo too)  but that should be easy to correct when tightening the bolts?

Thanks!

I'll check the tilt with water scale. I didn't notice it while I was standing next to the car so it could be the pic that fools the eye so that it seems to be tilting a bit.

You can really see the offset on a shaker car with the hood closed and the bubble/base plate off.  It's actually pretty surprising how much it is.

I thought the engine offset was to have equal weight over both front wheels when the weight of the driver is included.

I thought the offset was just to make room for the steering box. ???

Yes and when a MOPAR is converted over to RHD there is very little room for the steering box. Even the Dodge Phoenix (Plymouth Fury) when Chrysler released it in Australia the engine was still offset.
