What CFM 4-Barrel would match up with stock 68' 318?
« on: December 09, 2009 - 08:12:44 AM »
Looking to swap over to a Carter or Edelbrock on my 318. I have a 68 4-Barrel Cast Iron intake.  :burnout:

Best bet is a 600, if you can jet carbs then go with a 650. :2cents:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

You know that the intake runners won't line up with your 318-heads
Don't know what your ultimate plans are but I was reading this last night.
They use 360 "smog" heads which would solve that problem

The best combo I have found is the later police 318 44bl intake from the diplomat & the Holley 570  Avenger series as it is about the smallest carb I can find

On Ebay you might find a old Edelbrock with small 318 ports. The new performer intake has small ports too.

I like the Holley street dominator from the 1970's early 80's its a single plane but built for mild street use and has small ports. A dual plane will give the motor a bit better idle thou but power wise the Holley intake was darn good.

You can have your heads port matched, I don't know how much work that will take but if you don't you could actually hurt the performance due to turbulence in the runner.

The 340 ports are larger than the 318 ports..so think about it, you have a big hole matching up with a smaller hole, what happens at high flow-high rpms, air flows fast but hits the ridge of the smaller 318 ports.
Yes best thing is to pull the heads off and open up the outside of the ports but a small port intake works good too, maybe better if the motor isn't built for 6,000+ rpms.

you cannot remove enough metal from the 318 castings to match the 340 port window
yes you can use a 340 intake & yes it will work ok
