** Question RE: Power Steering Valve Adjustment*****
« on: December 11, 2009 - 10:41:34 PM »
Did the loosen & tap on the bolts bit to adjust the off center valve while I had the front end off the ground.   Wheel was yanking to the left pretty quickly prior, and after a bunch of hard tapping things were a lot better but it still wanted to go left.  If I turn the steering wheel to the right it fought back a bit & if I turned to the left it wanted to continue left but would stay relatively still if left alone.
Would you consider this normal or do I need to keep on tappin?

Thanks CP....I's afraid that was the case....Any advice on the most effective way to tap, I probably hit the bolt a hundred times all total... left the bolts extra loose toward the end.

Bullitt. Which way are you tapping the bolts, UP or DOWN. I'm curious because mine pulls to the right and haven't got around to doing the "wheels off the ground" thing yet (car's put away for the winter).

I'm tapping the bolts, that are toward the front of the car to make it not want to turn left , that's where I started & it seemed to help.
I did hit the back side plug a few times and that seemed to make it pull more to the left so I went back to the front side... guess I'm doing it correctly.

Thanks, sounds like I have to hit the "back side plug" to make it not want to turn right. That is, of course, if the problem isn't wheel alignment which I'll find out in the spring.

:woo:  Got back on this today after reviewing the Service Manual... I guess I'm just a D.A. but I was loosening the wrong "screws", the ones the arrows point to....Wrong...Just like it says loosen the valve body screws & tap on the screws at the bottom (if it pulls left)or the plug at the top (if it pulls right)..
So I get it to working good, tighten everything, let er down off the jack, fire up one more time & the wheel takes off to the right...WTF?!?!
Go through the whole process again and now it's fine.
        Now for the next mystery.

Thanks for clearing that up, but I knew it was the valve body screws anyway, just didn't know which direction to go in. I played with this once eons ago and do remember that it's very delicate. A minor adjustment can make a lot of difference. Glad to hear you're on the straight and narrow now - more or less.
