Really great pictures in this topic...it is too bad that cameras were not in hand more often as they are now adays...
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Green with Gold stripe 440
I found the original owner who raced this car back in the day yesterday and asked him about it...originally he was looking for a Nova SS396 to race but couldn't find one...so decided on this Challenger. His dad previously worked for a Dodge dealership and he was inadvertently given a Dodge Dealer only order form.
He loved the stripes...hood...4 speed...Hurst pistol grip and the 440 on the R/T model... so checked that box. He did not know at the time that the cross-ram 2-4bbl was a dealer installed option. The intake and carb were shipped in the trunk of the car and installed by a dealer in Lethbridge
Less than 2000 miles later he had blown the engine...the dealer would not honor the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty because the owner had sorta let it slip he had raced with it a "few times" Luckily because of his father's contacts the national rep looked at the engine...asked a bunch of questions and came up with the reason the engine had had blown was because of the steel wrist pins that expanded too much or too fast binding on the aluminum pistons
They fixed the engine and also asked him if he would like to race for them
So for a year he took the car to Calgary...Edmonton..Spokane...Seattle and Victoria. They paid all repairs...race prep the towing and meals and accommodations for him and his family
Every 4 or 5 races they would take the car into a Red Deer plant...tear down the engine to check the wrist pins. They told him that every 440 Magnum manufactured after that year had the new 22/1000 undersized wrist pins
After 1 year they said thanks to him completely rebuilt the drive train and returned to him a new car
In 1974 he sold it for 3000 and used the money as a deposit on a new house he had built for the family and still lives in and has no regrets not that he wouldn't still love to have that Challenger
The Challenger is owned by someone here in Alberta and is still original with less than 25,000 miles
The previous owner is still racing along with his 2 adult children. Sadly he does not know of any color pictures of the car
