Window "alignment" question
« on: December 13, 2009 - 01:01:12 PM »
I replaced the weatherstripping on the quarter windows but found that the passenger window still falls behind the top of the moulding if I roll the window up with the door closed.

turns out there is some noticeable play in the window if I grab the top and move it in and out....

Can I assume there are some parts inside the door where the window and track stuff meet that I can replace to firm this up and get things realigned right again?

one of the bushings on the slide may have broken or the bolts backed off

I just fixed that very problem on my drivers window. This process will be a lot easier with a helper, can be done by youself, not easy, I know  :swear:
Pull the glass, and the two glass to front guide holders are prolly floping or they will stay on the track. Pull them off the track or window and (I am not suggesting you do this, but it worked perfect for me) wrap duct tape tightly onto the portion of the holder that goes through the glass. The tighter the better to collapse it and give ther screws something to bite to. Next I put them on the window, tightened carefully and then on the taped side where it goes through the window, I shredded the long tape, pushed it down to contact the window and then put a glob of two part epoxy over the whole works.

You will need to tape the heck out of you door top or you will scratch the living hell out of the paint (ask me how I know  :banghead: ) I also removed the guide bolts and kind of had them (guides) flopping to line the window up easier, once the window is on the tracks, screw it to the lift and line up the top track bolts, then start the bottom track bolts and adjust from there, Including the up stops.

I had trouble with top rear and front lower alignment as well as in and out and the guides flopping, now the thing works like brand new, better even that the manual windows on the wifes focus!

Here is a picture of the holder so you know what I am talking about, I was gonna use it for What the heck is it but figured WTH

there are 4 sliders that go into the door tracks , if 1-2 are missing the window will be loose
the sliders are different for 70-71 , & 72 up , the early are a wide sqaure green slider , the later are a smaller round white roller

I looked in there and it seemed like everything was there....but there is play in a couple of the slides...I can pull in and out and it moves at the slide.....so does that mean that whatever holds them to the window is bad?

Figured if I have to take it apart to fix might as well replace all the stuff that wears if I can....Good vendor for this stuff?

RTS has this kit ---

http://www.rtspecialties.net/proddetail.asp?prod=1000049

$79...ouch....is that ONE window or two?  It looks to be for two?

Looks like they also have the parts separate.

But ouch.....

Do the windows just basically unbolt and pull straight up so I can replace this stuff?  Or is it a huge pain in the shorts?

I'd have to yes to both.
You'll probably find the old lubricant on the glass slides to have lost its slipperyness (is that a word? :clueless:) so you might want to remove them to just to clean them up. :2cents:

For the small cost - I would suggest buying the window guide kits from R/T specialties. They are a pain in the ass to setup properly so with new equipment pull the window, install the equipment, align everything then let your grand kids worry about fixing it again.

Like I said in my post above, the only thing that will make it easier is a helper and a lot of patience  :2thumbs:
If you follow what I did, you can save yourself the cash for new parts. You will most likely find that it is just the window holders that are bad.

I dont know what they are called, but the in/out movement seems to be at the bottom gizmos that connect the window to the vertical tracks......

I was looking a bit more...looks like you just unbolt two bolts at the horizontal track and the window would just lift up and out of the vertical tracks?
