Cuda Trunk Extension / Filler Panel Overview
« on: December 15, 2009 - 07:59:45 PM »
Here I'm placing the AMD trunk extension / filler panels up for review and there's really not much to say. I test fitted them and they fit like a glove.  Very accurate and true to the originals. I've seen the some generic ones out there along with the ones from Sherman and I wasn't to pleased with the look or fit. I haven't had a chance to compare the AMD panels with the ones from Goodmark yet, but I can tell you AMD did a great job on these!

Cudadude,

They look 100% better than the ones I bought from Year One a while ago. Don't know what brand they were though.Just bought a heap of AMD stuff & couldn't agree with you more on the quality of the AMD stuff.

I used the Sherman ones a few years ago ... total junk.  I ended up just cutting off what I needed to replace and left the rest.

The US made Sherman trunk filler panels are very low quality.  I believe that the Sherman Taiwan panels fit much better and are EDP coated, where the US ones are galvanized steel.

Ksierens, which panels did you have from Sherman?  Were the EDP coated or galvanized steel finish?

Thanks,

Daniel

Would you say Sherman's EDP coated trunk extensions would compare in quality to AMD's?

I'd love to see pics if anyone has 'em  ;D

They were the galvanized.  Back when I was working on the body, that was all that was available.

Daniel,
The AMD and EDP Sherman panels look very similar from what I can see in the pics other than one detail...

On the rear portion that would be welded to the tail panel the AMD panel has a large upward curve to meet up with the trunk pan(see my first pic) and the Sherman panel appears to be flat. I'm glad you posted the pics though. These are the comparisons I'm looking for with these panel "Overviews".

Look close, the Sherman panel also has the rear lip swooping up.  Both AMD and Sherman panels are flat on the quarter panel side. :2cents:

Here is the section I'm referring to with the curve.
Maybe they both have it, I'm just not seeing it in your pic of the Sherman panels.

Looks like you are correct in regards to the back flange.  I was referring to what appears to be an incline on that side of the panel.  You are right though, the rear edge does look straight in the picture that I posted.  Again, the AMD panel is slightly different than the Sherman panel.  Both would work, but the Sherman panel would take slightly more work to install.

My original point is that the new EDP coated Sherman panels are far superior to the 90's panels that we all loved to hate.  We as enthusiast have to remember though that at the time that is all that was available.  If Sherman had not be supplying those parts then, there would have not been any parts at all to fix our rides.

Good eyes... :2thumbs:

Just a question, is that your filler panel above in the picture?  If so, how are you going to get to the inside of the flange to weld the holes for the plug welds?

By welding these bad boys in before the tail panel.
Since the lower corners of the tail panel overlap part of the trunk extension flanges. (...If thats what your asking)
