    Been chasing a noise under the hood.........

    Like the title says, I have been chasing down a ticking sound. It sounds like a loose valve tapping. I have checked all of the valves twice and they are set correctly. I even removed the rocker shafts and rocker arms to check them out. Everything checks out normal.  Plenty of oil, no signs of any issues. I hear it when driving, but when the car is at idle and I am listening for it under the hood, I can't hear it. I have used a 3/4" dowel rod and pressed it to every section of the motor while running and all I can hear is a rotational whirring sound  --  no tapping. I am beginnning to think it is a header leak. I was hoping that wasn't the case because those tings are a bear to change.    :working:  I think I will replace those over the next few weekends and see what happens. Any other ideas that I haven't thought of?    :dunno:

    Is it for sure related to the engine...speeds & slows with engine RPM?   I have had a ticking from wheels/brakes/bearings that sounded just like a lifter but was vehicle speed related.

    are you using a mechanical fuel pump , it could be the rod , if you have a roller cam you need a bronze tipped rod

    Electric fuel pump at rear of car, no mechanical pump.  And it is a small roller cam....      :thumbsup:

    that is what I recalled , I have seen 2-3 other big block make the whirring noise will no problems , cannot figure what makes the noise

    I was thinking of my issue when I posted in that thread..   :grinyes: 

    I have been hoping my issue was a loose valve or something easy to remedy. If you have ever changed header gaskets on an Indy headed Hemi in an "A" body with custom built 2-1/4" headers, you will understand why I hate to begin that process....    :working:    Probably 8-9 hours at best of solid working...     :faint:   That is if everything goes just right....    :banghead:

    I suspect there would be a lot of discussing the best way to approach the task, talking and laughing in general, telling war stories, tipping back a cold beverage, and BS'ing in general.   :blah:   Probably wouldn't get a whole lot of work done though......     :roflsmiley:    :bigsmile:

    Im up if needed. I got a set of hemi headers to :bigsmile: But there B/E body style.  I think with the coolant drained, the car on a 4 post, and the tools rolled up right there, I could slip that gasket in and out quicker than 8 hrs.

    Oh, I dont recall, does the coolant get drained on a hemi?  Either way nuts, buts, adhesive, gaskets and fun chat .......  No charge for the fellowshipping/labor Ken.   You just had a birthday. We can do all this in between your senior citizen nap times :stirpot:

    The passenger side headers are practically inaccessible unless you have hamster hands...  lol    :roflsmiley:   
    No coolant to drain, just thousands of attempts at getting a few of the hidden bolts started....    :pullinghair:  I have done it before, I just ain't looking forward to doing it again.....     :faint: 
    I'll try and get it done in the next few weekends. The next few are busy with the holidays, but soon after I will tackle the job....     :working:
