How long have you been using a computer?
« on: December 17, 2009 - 11:20:19 PM »
I started around in 2003. Had dial up. Didn't flinch an eye on how slow it was going.

I remember then it was intimidating at first. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint were like brain surgery to me back then. When I joined here, pictures to put on the web was an unfathonable task. It's good to learn new technology that makes life easier. I've come a long way since then but still so much more to still learn.

I got my first home pc in the fall of 1997. I remember the opposite. Seemed like at first it took forever to get anywhere and do anything. Dialup connection seemed to take forever, pages seemed to take forever to load, etc. After a while I just ignored or got used to the time consumption. High speed internet was a blessing indeed.

I bought an IBM 8187-D1U along with a 15" NEC flatscreen in 2005 and have been on a cable tv/internet bundle from the beginning so i missed the slow era. Nary a spec of trouble until about six months ago when the original 256k memory stick started slowing down. I replaced it with two slightly used 512k memory sticks and now everything's hunky dory.

Mid 1982
I remember my first computer cost $4500
It weighed about 30 lbs, was about 2 feet wide, 14 inches deep and about 6 inches high.
The processor was a 386 (whatever that means) and was really just a glorified typewriter!
The big 5 1/4 inch floppy disks cost about $3 each.
I actually learned and used DOS, and the very earliest version of AutoCad.
My wife developed an expert system on it that could actually help in medical diagnosis!

Ahh, times have sure changed!

Around 1998 or so. It was around the time I go my Charger. I was only like 7 and I was cruising Hemmings looking at 4 cars....'69 Chargers, '69 GTOs, '70 GSXs and '71 Camaros. I didn't know much more besides those for the first year or so I was on the computer. I only knew those because I had the Charger, my dad had a '69 GTO, we were restoring his friend's '70 GSX and that same friend had a '71 Camaro my dad restored that we used to take to shows. Eventually I got more and more into cars. A funny note though, I used to go to my aunts when I was young and print off pages and pages of '69 Charger and '70 GSX pictures and then hide them so she wouldn't see I printed off that much :smilielol:

I started way back in '82 while in the sixth grade using a Commodore 64 and a radio shack "Tandy" I think was the name of it. Very simple machines they were.

:faint:  Paid almost $3000 for a 286AT running DOS.  No mouse, or sound card or modem.  It had 2 floppy disk drives 3½" and 5¼".  The hard drive was 40MB.  I still have an unopened package of 3½" disks.

Those were the days when you could customize your command prompt using .bat files.  Things have become so E-Z now.  So I have over 20 years experience using these rascals.

Ditto...88 or 89     tape drives, 3.5 and 5.2 discs.  It was all very expensive back then.  memory was in kilobites and a hard drive was 125 and 250 megabits.  I saved for ever to be able to buy a 1 gig hard drive. I still have dos, dos 3  windows 3  windows 95, windows 98, 98 se , me , xp  now getting windows 7.   My dad got me into it all, we learned to assemble our own computers to keep costs down by 50 % or more

1981, Grade 11, an 8k memory Commodore PET, monochromatic screen with a tape drive - could sometimes use the entire class period trying to find your program on one of those. When the school splurged for a dual 5 1/4" floppy disk drive it was the size of a small suitcase!
Bought my first computer in '83 a Commodore SuperPet $2500.00- 96k of memory (a pile of memory back then) and six languages fortran, basic, cobal, apl... and I can't remember the other two.

Our business has had computers since about '84 mostly for bookkeeping, my earliest recollection of actually putting one to use myself would be around '88 when we went on-line to place orders through a private network with GE.  Brought home my 1st PC around '93 & tried the internet a few times but the 14,4kbps modem was pretty useless. By the late 90's we had DSL at work now running 2-T1s. Been on the net at home regularly since the late '90s with 56kbps modems and had DSL for about 7-years.

I've been using them at work since 1993 but didn't get a home PC until 95 I think.  I remember that dial up ; ( ugh.
