Need help shopping for a auto darkening welding helmet
« on: December 19, 2009 - 04:42:24 PM »
I just looked on e-bay and I want a good reliable helmet. I don't care about the paint job on it ::)  I have had a few cheap ones at work and don't really trust them but I sure could use a good reliable one? :dunno: :1zhelp:

You get what you pay for-the more arc sensors and larger lens the better IMO.I think the Performance series loks like a decent enough one for anything but a full time welder.

I bought a Speedglas, I think from the site below.  Spend a little more and get a good helmet if you have a lot of welding to do.  You won't be sorry.

Don't forget Craigslist.  I bought my Miller Elite locally for $100.  Yes, I feel bad.

I have a couple of Miller's, one at home and one at work. I really like them.

The red flame job elite is my home unit and the vintage elite digital is at work.

I use jackson at home.  cheap and never had any trouble in 5 years.  doesnt wear very comfortable though.
At work I use a swiss made Optrell. They are top of the line for me. but not cheap...
I dont like speedglas for their fit on a big head....  :sly:

Ya,I bought a cheaper model Miller off a co-worker for $50!It works fine for what I do but the larger lens would be better.

Seems like you can spend $50 or up to $400 I need to figure out what features I need. So far I see that the bigger the viewing area the more ya pay. I couldn't care less what colour they are.  I just want something I can depend on. I have a Mig and a Tig.

I have a miller. The guys at the welding shop made a good point when I was shopping for my helmet, why go cheap on your eyes, you only have one set. So that's why I spent the couple hundred for a miller. Absolutely love it.

I know ..... I know.  I got mine from Harbor Freight and it has a fairlly good sized glass. It works great and is also adjustable as to how dark it gets. If I was a pro welder then I would look for something much better. As I only weld once in a while this one works for me.

??? Don't send me your helmet :grinno: I've wanted one for a few years. I have a flip down one, but I don't use it much , just for tig. For mig I find myself closing my eyes and welding. Not the best plan I know!
