Pro Trac Vs BFG tyres - experiences?

G'day All,
I'm looking at fitting new tyres to the Barracuda and was thinking about either the 235 & 275 Pro Trac tyres or sticking with BFGs which I currently run (225/70R14s all round).  What are peoples impressions/experiences of the Pro Trac tyres (from Coker I think).  Do the Pro Tracs have a squarer profile than the BFGs (clearance from the rear fender is going to be tight regardless)?  Are the Pro Tracs bias ply?  Ride and grip quality?  Reason I would go for the Pro Tracs over the BFGs is from the pictures they look to have a wider tread section profile but are considerably more expensive than the BFGs here so I want to get it right if I go donew this line.  Any pics of Cudas with Pro Tracs on??

for a driver I would not want Bias tires at all
 but I am not a fan of the BFG Either , what about Cooper or Dunlop

Pretty limited choice in Australia for 15" muscle-car period tyres and I hadn't seen anyone advertising Dunlops or Coopers (mostly 4WD Coopers on sale here) but I'll check it out though.

My only experience with bias ply tyres was 35" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws on my Jeep, they actually drove a lot nicer than the radial version of the same tyre but I imagine there is a bit of difference between a car and a modified 4WD.

I run G-Force TAs on the front 235's and on the rear found that the latest (believe it or not) Dunlop GT Qualifiers 275's have a modern tread and a really soft compound rubber. They will wear out quick which is ok by me. The GTs were really inexpensive and are rated to 115MPH I believe, with G-Forces rated at 140MPH+. The G-Forces have the same name as Goodrich TAs but were used in higher end cars like Corvettes up to around early 2000's. I have had the car up to about 105MPH so far and there was not a clunk, click, rattle or shake from anywhere on the car which tells me the tires are near perfect round. Is a good value package in my opinion and so far has proven itself in cornering as we have some pretty good winding roads around my area. Time will tell for my combo and we hear you about wanting to get it right the first time and not have to buy two sets of tires to find your combo that you are happy with.

Pro Trac is a bias ply tire. Might be good for on track times, but aren't the best choice for road manners. The flat spot over night and take some time to even out and will follow ruts in the road. they also are not very tolerant of a wide range of alignment adjustments and will wear unevenly if you have an aggressive, radial friendly alignment.

BFG T/As look nice and are popular, but tend to be one of the oldest carcass designs out there. I would think that Cooper, Dunlop, or Goodyear could be found somewhat locally. Member Boyd on this site also found some nice sizes from a company called Maxxis which has international distribution channels

Thanks for the replies.  Probably got a bit carried away with the old-school aspect of the Pro Tracs and if they flat spot overnight, I'll be stuffed in a car that gets driven a couple of times a month!  Also pay an extra $100 tyre here for 275 Pro Tracs so not good value for money (BFGs are $279 Vs Pro Tracs at $379 each here).  Going to check some rims tomorrow so will check on other tyre options then.

I am in the "don't like TA" camp as well.  They don't drive much better than bias belted tires imo.

How about Michelin?  They are usually good for the money along with the others already mentioned.  It is getting hard to find good 15" tires.
