Which radiator?
« on: December 21, 2009 - 06:48:13 PM »
i've been eyeing some diffrent rads on ebay and  have a couple questions. first of all my car originaly had a 383 and came with a 22inch rad. i still have it and it works fine but do you think it has enough cooling capabilty for a driver 440?
i don't want to really mess around with fitting a 26 inch radiator, and if it isn't stock it doesnt really matter to me. so i have been looking at new aluminum 22 inch radiators and wondering what your opinions are. also i'm not a huge fan of the silver. do you think i could paint the rad black? would it even last?  :dunno:
thanks

My tow vehicle has a 440-6 with a 22" aluminum radiator.    I switched from brass to aluminum to cure a overheating problem while towing.  Tows cool now.

my 440-6  4 speed dana 410 car has a 3 row.  It never overheats.  You have to have everything clean inside the block, the right clearances, the right combo on pullies and fan and also a shroud.

Some 440 & 440-6 cars came with 22" rads.

If you have 3.55 gears or lower you should upgrade.

I shoved in the 26 inch rad in my ride. Fits pretty good too. I modify the rad brackets much more than the car. The brackets can be cut and trimmed to slip in...at least for my ride it worked great. Just 2 inches on each side. Went with a taller rad also.

Overkill is good on a rad.   I went with a BC downflow.Fit was great. All you really need to do to put in a 26" is drill 2 holes. It's bigger than the opening for it but oh well.I saw a very significant drop in temps. But just a 340 + .030.  Not sure on painting an alum. one.  If you get a crossflow you could get the top cover and just paint that. :2cents:

I'm running the original 22. I added a pusher fan just to be safe, but I've had no problems so far..

You can spray it lightly with radiator black...or, the better and more expensive, of course, is powder coating.  Powder coating, when done properly, should be thinner than paint and allow better heat transfer.

I'd use BBQ paint, cheap and available anywhere!
