We checked my mates barracuda and his went up to 15 volts. Can anybody shed some light? Please!!! Happy new year btw  :drunk:

If I remember right, the battery is in the boot  ;D ,the battery is new, alternator good, voltage regulator been changed?. Stock electrical wiring or modified? I know there was another thread that might have answered these questions but I didn't find it. Charging through the bulkhead connector or direct wire from alt to bat?

I'm curious, when you rev the motor, are you getting the same voltage at the battery AND the alternator output? Here's what my service manual says:

While idiling the battery reads 12.10 and the alternator reads 11.94. While revving to around 2500rpm the batt is 12.37. The alternator wasnt doing this yesterday when checked but now it jumps from 11.94 to 16 volts very quickly, the numbers are nearly a blur????????????? Any ideas? yesterday it read 12.6 consistently when revving now its up and down like a jack in the box????

dodj  the alternator has an extra wire feeding straight to the starter relay, which is straight to the battery. Im running a 6al msd box standard distributor and the wiring is mostly all stock!

Nothing like a problem that moves around on you :smilielol: You have any hair left? :pullinghair:
Anyway, with the charge rate changing on you, it sounds like a grounding issue, loose connection, or a bad wire. I would first go over the engine to firewall ground connection AND the battery to frame connection (I know, again) just to be sure. Then make sure the VR (was it swapped out? if not it would be a good idea) is well grounded to the firewall. Then I would check the VR connector to make sure both wires are getting good solid contact to the VR. Then I would follow the two F wires from the alt to the VR. The blue one will come to a 5 way junction, the green will go straight from the alt to the VR. Check the insulation for cracks, signs of too much heat, discolouration, etc...
I would also check the newer wire from the alt to the start relay. The start relay isn't very big and sometimes the connections on the stud get a little crowded and loosen up/corrode on you. Just make sure they are tight and clean.
I've been looking into moving to Australia in the next year or two (3?), hopefully this gets solved before I get there.

The vr is original and i didnt know it had to be grounded?
It just grounds through the firewall mounting bolts, not a separate wire. It would be possible for someone to paint the VR case and interrupt the ground that is supposed to exist from the case through the bolt to the firewall, but it's not likely - just possible. The vr won't work properly if it isn't grounded.
I was just watching the news. NS Wales is getting pretty wet -your area?

have you check the alternator drive belt ?  it can be too much tight or loose.  Check it or replace it.
