Door skins
« on: December 25, 2009 - 08:26:58 PM »
Anyone dealing with the 'cuda door skins?  How hard are they to install?  I need to patch about 6" up on both doors all the way across.  Thought to maybe just do the whole thing. But for 269.00 It would all be new. Any thoughts?

It's definately a skill I cant do. A bodyshop mopar friend of mine did it on a 68 dart. He took a skin off a good door and then installed it on another. I couldnt even tell. He said you just unfold the lip and then fold it back on the other, but I am sure it's harder than that

Yea Al, that's about all. But the finesse comes in when you dolly the edges smooth. Thats the tricky part.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Pretty easy. The front, rear and bottom edges have a small lip that is folded over the edge of the inner structure, the top usually just slides over.To take the old one off I just grind off the edge till the seam splits and the skin pulls right off.To install the new one you just slip it over the shell and fold the edge over with a hammer and dolly or there are special crimping tools available, either way there is usually some dolly work to starighten the edges. Also make sure to fit th edoor to the opening as the skin does have some room to move around before you lock it in place with a couple tack welds.I would do a skin over a large patch any day!

pretty much sums it up, looks way more intimidating then it actually is.

 :iagree:
Results will be much better with the full skin vs. trying to patch a section in. :2cents:

Also, Eastwood sells tools to do the rolling or crimping of the new door panel.

I'm not a huge fan of Eastwood unless it's absolutly unavailable anywhere else.
High mark up and high shipping. Shipping time to door is only O.K.  :2cents:
Some stuff is no where else to be found and then it's justifiable to buy from them.

Check out Autobody Toolmart also on items. See the hammer and rubber dolly.
