Hood scoop filler?
« on: December 26, 2009 - 08:01:18 AM »
I've got my RT hood on, and I have the bezels mounted in the hood scoop holes. I understand that there is a plate that goes in the bezel from the factory. It appears that the plate that goes in the bezel will prevent air flow. I kind of like the idea of leaving the bezel open so we can get a little more air flow for cooling. Is there a tasteful or good looking way to put something in there that will allow air flow???
Or is it better to just put the factory filler in there???
THANKS for any advice!

Left my bezels out.  If you want to make it cleaner looking then you can cut off the little tabes that the bezels screw on to but it'll be tough to put them back.  :2cents:

You can try cutting some screen to fit, paint the screen black, then screw them in using thr factory screw locations for the bezels.  :dunno:

The right Stainless Steel screen or a tight mesh might look pretty good!

I don't think they are designed for air flow anyway. It would be cool to open them up a little then run your mesh....   :dunno:

If anything, they allow a little heat to escape when the car isn't moving.  I know when I had the car running and there was snow on the openings of the scoops the snow melted.  On a '71 Challenger ad it states performance hood with detachable plates so they were meant to be removed by the factory for increased air flow or something.

Never noticed that! Great, I bet that will cause a hunt for 71 specific scoops and prices sky rocket!

You could get some of that masonary lath and put that inplace of the scoop plates.  A buddy of mine just custom bent some of that stuff and made grill inserts for his Civic SI.  It looks really good.

the way the scoop is made it has a rear panel with a lip directing any water out into the hood bracing to run down away from the engine so thay had to be designed to flow some air , even scoops fitted very low to the hood can flow a surprising amount of air on the highway at speed

Not to hijack the thread, but anybody have a link to a good looking stainless steel mesh for the inserts?  I'm looking to do the same thing on my Cuda and haven't found any mesh that I like yet (looking at places like Home Depot and Lowes).

Thanks,
Travis
