Valve cover breather?!?@%^&!
« on: December 27, 2009 - 09:06:34 PM »
318 motor, 4 bbl weber/holley carb and an edelbrock intake with a K&N air filter and stock valve covers.

I am running filters in the breather holes of the valve covers.  Oil smoke wafts out of both of these, particularly the one on the passenger side.  Needless to say this has wiped out my air cleaner and going to coat my freshly cleaned up engine in oil. I actually smell like oil if I drive the car for too long.

What are my options to properly vent the valve covers and not pump oil into the air?

Here is a picture.  I have cleaned and detailed the engine since then and I want to keep it nice.

I would think of adding baffles to your valve covers and I use a breather cap on one side and a pcv valve connected to the carb on the other-no problems

Thanks guys.  I will get a PCV valve and run it into the carb. The cover on the driver side has a baffel and it does not smoke like the pass side does if at all.

I'll bet adding a pcv valve will solve your problem.

That's what the PCV is for, it directs the excess fumes into the base of the carby for burning in the motor, however under hard acceleration or constant high speed the breather will expel fumes as the PCV cannot pass all the fumes into the motor for burning. On factory setups the breather on the other rocker cover went into the air filter to stop oil vapor contaminating the air and making a mess under the hood.   :2thumbs:

PCV is the fix just make sure it runs to the carb base so all cylinders burn off the smoke , hooking to the intake runner will foul 1 plug

Thanks guys, I don't have a riser block so inputing it under the carb is out scout.   Should I connect it through the PCV port <in red> or the vapor vent <in yellow>  When I got the car it had the grungy original breather with a tube going to the vapor vent.

Yellow one is for pcv. Red is your fuel vapor vent.

Pass. breather shouldn't have that end for a tube on it.Unless you run a standard air cleaner. PcV normally comes off the Drivers side cover to the yellow vent.

So I should get a pcv valve for the drivers side, then put the input filter on the pass side?

The PCV valve would be on the opposite valve cover from the breather filter. It doesn't matter which is on what side unless you are going for correct appearance.
