MOPAR 340 MOTOR RPM REDLINE.
« on: December 28, 2009 - 12:04:56 PM »
 ;D  Hi Guys,

Who can tell me what the redline rpm is for a standard 340 4bbl  motor ?

I know these engines were nicknamed  screamers, but there is no redline on the factory

tach so is there an electronic rev limiter or something to stop us from over revving the

motor.  ( I know the max horsepower is around 5000 RPM)          :feedback:
just one more job to do..................  (O----{|||}----O)

I would feel better about twisting its tail if it was an early model with forged guts. The later ones were cast. They worked great, but I just would not want to test the upper rev limit with a cast one...    :2cents:

Yeah, for some reason some of the old original tachs tend to run a bit faster than actual RPM.

Just at idle mine was 800RPM off until I had it rebuilt.   :bricks1:

My stock tach is way off as well. So I have a 3 3/8" tach sitting in front of it for now that is accurate. I just installed a 70 340 that has a camshaft that's power curve is suppose to be to 6500 rpm, I have shifted there before with no issue, but for most of my driving the car doesn't see above 4000. What amazes me most is how quickly the 340 revs, it is absolutely amazing, I love it.

I love the 340. It is easy to over rev in low gear. The thing spins hard and fast especially when the tires brake loose.

Ok thanks for the input guys,

Max horsepower for the stock 340 is at 5000 rpm, so i suppose theres not much point

revving past 5500.   Thats what i will stick to anyway !   My rallye tach reads low so i

have fitted a 2" digital tach next to the steering column.   :2thumbs:

Yea these little small blocks can take some RPM's.  But if you try and twist them like a nascar motor you can wind up with a few problems. Just before I parked my car for some 20+ years it was'nt running to good--the tranny was out ect.  When I finaly tried to get it going I found these.  I bent a couple so bad I had to take the heads off to get them out.  I wish I knew how high I did rev it but this was years ago. I am pretty sure at that time that alcohol was probably involved.    ::)
