Good and cheap wheel/tire package suppliers?
« on: December 29, 2009 - 05:35:22 PM »
Anyone have any good leads? I'm looking specifically for 17" AR torque thrust IIs. LOVE that look. :2thumbs:
I can find 17x9.5" and 17x8" (both 4.5" backspace), but havent settled exactly on the rubber yet. I know some companies sell mounted and balanced packages, but our combination of classic wheels and rubber may be harder to find.

If I have to order rubber seperately I may go with the bfg g-force T/As 275/50-17 and 245/45-17. Anyone running them?

Thanks

I know on 15x8 or 10 with 4.5 back space doesnt work with the stock leaf spring location. I am not sure about 17's   did you check?

I've carefully measured my "stock" setup and I have 15x8 and 15x7s on there now. I can see that about 4.5" backspace in the rear and about the same in the front is the most I can go without pushing it. Plus, I've read almost the entire wheel/tire combo thread. A NOVEL in itself.
I think I'll be good with 4.5 front and back. At worst I can use a small spacer, or even relocate the rear springs.

I think you will have to move your springs in in the back for 10" wheels.  I am running AR TTII wheels with 255/60-17 tires, and that is pretty much as big as I can go.  Here's a couple pics of the clearance.

I forgot to mention I dont really have a "stock" setup. It has a 69.5-72 b-body rear with a 3.54 powr-lokr. I think it is slightly narrower than an e-rear? I know the mount pads were modified by the prior owner. From the old welds it looks like the pads were moved outward almost an inch on each side.
Anyways, I do know I have 275/60-15s in back and I have about 3/4" clearance from the spring right now, with about a 3.5" backspace on 8" rims, so maybe a 4" backspace would be about max.
Heres my deciding factor:
Using a tire size calculator my existing 15" 275/60 tire on an 8" rim is exactly the same height and width of a 17" 275/50 tire, even when mounted on a 9.5" rim. If thats the case I should be okay using the same backspace I have now...no?

I bought my wheels off Ebay for something like $850 shipped, then went to a local used tire shop and bought the tires for $40 each, including mounting.

Discount tire direct online is awsome to deal with , possibly Tire Rack too
I would avoid the BFG tires , I have never had good results with any of their products , even the G force seem to be too hard to get any real traction & the Nitto Drag radials are far suprior to the Bfg Drag radials

Those rocket racing wheels look nice on a cuda, but I think I can go to 9" in back with 265 or 275 rubber, and they dont make anything bigger than 17x8. Thanks for the tip on newstalgia. I'll look very carefully at all their offerings.
And I hear ya about the bfgs. I'm certainly not loyal to them, but they have good 17" size selection. I'm still looking.

Hmm.

Not sure about the housing width. In B bodies, 66-67 are the narrowest, then 68-70, then 71-74. I think stock E body housings are wider still. In an E body with a 10" rims, a 66-67 rear can use 5" back space. With 68-70 rears you need 5.5 backspace. With a 71-74 rear, I dont know. Also , have your springs been moved at all?

I have 295/50 tires on a 8" wide rim with 4.75 of backspace and the stock spring lcoation and housing. My tires are about .25" away from the rear spring segment and about 1.5" off the wheel opening lip.

I recently read a big tire test about 17" performance rubber. BFG had its butt handed to them.  I think the overall best wet/dry, handling and braking winner was a Kumho or Nitto. Price was also a facotr in this as they figured they were testingmid range tires with a price cap of $150 each.  The one unlimited tire they threw in for validation was a Michelin Pilot. While it did pretty good overall, it actually was beaten in a few catagories and was priced at well over $250. They got all the tires from Tire Rack and the test was conducted by Car & Driver, so there may be a link on either of their web sites if you want to search it.

I originally had BFG G-Force on my 17" wheels, but all I could get from the store was 235/45-17s for the front and 255/45-17s for the rear, and they looked way too small for what I was going for.  I now have Goodyear GSAs, 235/55-17 on the front and 255/60-17 on the rear.

Do you guys in the US get different BFG books than us? The only 275/17 I can see in my books are a 40 series. The widest 50 series is a 255? I agree on avoiding BFG and looking for kumho's or Nittos. I,m looking for a taller front maybe a 255/45-17 front and 255/50-17 rear. Any ideas  on mixing aspect ratios front to rear?
