Start-up Issue
« on: December 30, 2009 - 06:49:53 AM »
Hi,
I'm dealing with fuel issues when I try to start-up the cold engine.  Basically, when I push on the throttle with the engine off, the carburator pump doesn't squirt fuel in the intake and I have to cranck about 20-25 sec before the engine going to start.

After the engine starts, the carburator pump works fine.

Any  sugegstion ?

What Carby are you running ?

Sounds like a bit of drain back on the fuel line side and perhaps you need to check your float level to see if their is fuel in the carby, it should squirt fuel regardless weather it is running or not when you pump the gas, hot or cold.

:iagree: How long does it sit before you have this problem?  A day or 2, or longer.  It is most likely either your float is too low, or, more likely, the fuel is either evaporating from excessive heat in the engine bay, or it is being sucked back through the lines to the fuel tank.

my carb is a Carter AFB.  It works fine with the engine running.  I'm experiencing this kind of issue when I leave the car in the garage for more than one week.   My first idea was that the fuel is sucked back through the lines.  There should be a check valve ?

It could just be the nature of your car.  I have a six pack setup and mine has the same symptoms.  If it does sit for more than a week, I just pour a spray can cap full of gas through the small hole into the center carb bowl, and she fires right up.

Check to be sure the pump bore is not pitted & the seal on the plunger is soft , also try raising the float level a little , the carbs seem to be more finicky with the level on the low side

When my cars have been sitting idle, I pour gas down into the carb. It fires right up and gets that fuel pump working quicker. :2cents:

If you don't want to mess with gas, a blast with starting fluid will work wonders.

No starting fluid, it can damage the rings and/or pistons

My car sets up and the carbs bleed down. I don't mind it tho. I dont touch the throttle for about 10 seconds as I crank it. Then I stop, pump the pedal 3 times and it's running. I like to watch my alt gauge go full charge so I see everything getting a full workout :2thumbs:

:iagree: Plus you run with no gas for a brief moment because the bowl is dry.  It will work in a pinch, but it's better to pour some gas into the bowl.

Either works, but the engine will run longer with a little gas being poured down into the carb.  The whole idea is to get the fuel pump primed and start pumping. Another, better idea is just go with a Electric fuel pump.
