Guess I am paying for my recent purchases.
« on: January 01, 2010 - 11:28:56 PM »
My wife made an executive decision Friday to get rid of the old lenolium floor(which was 3 layers deep I was to find out) and have a nice husband/wife project of lets lay some ceramic tile. I only thought I had a 3 day weekend looking at me lol. So I started scraping the floor last night. Today out comes the fridge, the stove, the dishwasher, the washer and dryer. Here I go scraping again to get down to concrete. My arms feel like they have shin splints lol. The fun starts tomorrow when we will again test our love of each other.
On a side note, we almost did not get married at all when we put wallpaper in our master bedroom, trying to spruce up our house right after we closed on it and 2 weeks before we married.

I don't envy you doing that job.
I was once a floor rip out & prep grunt for a flooring company when I was young.

Brett,

You know the routine…

 :useless:

All that matters is if your wife like it when finished.  :grinyes:

Too late to get a before pic Jim, sorry. If it turns out halfway decent I might post an after pic though. No promises because this is my first attempt at tiling lol.

Been there too Brett!
My first house we ripped up the floor with a friend. This was a house build in 1927, and it had somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 layers of flooring and different levels of sub-flooring. As soon as we got to the bottom layer, we had to stop. It was asbestos floor tile, and my wife started to freak out.
the floor was shaped like a bowl and I ended up gridding the whole floor and making it level from the center out.
In hindsight, if it doesn't kill ya, it sure makes your relationship stronger.
That kitchen turned out amazing, and it sold the house for us.
Hang in there!
Post pics of the project!

That sure would suck to hit asbestos instead of concrete   :scared:
Where I used to live as a kid there were those compacted asbestos shingles on the outside of the houses. We used to break them off of houses that were vacant(it was a big natural gas compressor station with 50 or so houses provided by EPNG) and throw them like poor boy frisbies lol. Thanks for the encouragement.   :2thumbs:

Hey Brett, remember when it starts falling apart. Step back, take a deep breath, give your wife a kiss and keep keeping on with the job at hand my friend

We did the cabinets a couple of years ago. In retrospect I am sure it would have been just a bit more money but not much more trouble to have tiled the floor then. When I do post a finished pic, you guys better not laugh, she picked the tile, not me.

Done that to but just one layer + the underlayment of particle board on a plywood deck. Had to build it back with 1/4" plywood & backer-board, luckily we found a guy to lay our tile. He worked 3-evenings 4-5 hours for $450.00 including material except tile(10-yrs ago). Would have probably taken me 3X+++ that long. I have to say it was the best improvement made to this house from a cost/results standpoint.
