quick question "D-O-D-G-E" hood letters
« on: January 06, 2010 - 01:08:14 PM »
I've seen some Challenger R/T's with the hood lettering, and some without.

What determined if a car got the chrome letters?

They were options for chrome buddy.  I have a set of them for a 1970 challenger in the garage I think but they are not pristine.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

71 R/T Challengers did not get the hood lettering. They have the Dodge logo in the grille.

I though it was as simple as 70's got it, 71's did not, but I've seen 70's with and without, both with and without the hood stripe.

The proliferation of reproduction hoods and clones makes it hard find a reference photo.

Looks like in 1970 it may have depended what other options the car was getting. Only the bulge hood would have them. A shaker hood would not.
In 1971 none of the R/T's would have got the hood letters. As far as I know there were no R/T's after the 71 year.

Are you asking about just the 1970 cars?

Like I said it was an option on the 70's even the trim on the front might not have been chrome on the hood.

I'm sure they were not a stand alone option. What trim code were they attached to? Since they require a specific hood, it would have appeared on the fender tag as all options/packages that require specific sheet metal do.

True in some ways.  Dealers also changed and put on some things when it got to the dealerships.  Most of the time it was on the fender tag or the build sheet but not always from what I saw when at the dealerships in the 70's.

Wrong and wrong. Asked and answered....bulge hood got them, flat hoods did not.

Show me a "non chrome" front hood molding on a 70.
