rim/wheel backspace question
« on: September 09, 2004 - 08:43:29 PM »
I have a 72 Cuda that is ready for new rims and tires.  I am looking at the American Racing Hopster wheels and I plan on getting 15X7 for the front and 15X8 in the back.  On the rear I will be putting 275/60/R15 tires.  I don't want the tires to be sticking out of the wheelwell.  What backspacing would be right for these rims and tires so they sit in the wheelwell nicely.  I would like them to be the same backspacing in the front and rear to give me that deep dish look in the back. The rims come stock with 3 3/4 backspacing but I can get any backspacing I want.  I had been looking at rallye rim repros and the 15X7 ones come with a 4 1/4 backspace and the 15X8 wheels come with a 4 1/2 backspace.  What do you guys think would be best?   Thanks in advance for any imput.

April  ;D

Here's what i can say from experience...15 x 7 rallyes will fit a 275-60-15 under the wheel well no problem. The tire is a little big for a 7 inch rim, but I've run them with no problems. I prefer the 255-60 on the 15x7's.  I can tell you if your car has had the quarters replaced with aftermarket ones, watch the wheel well lip...some of the aftermarket quarters have wide lips   >:(    ...they'll need to be cut down to fit the 275 (i've run into this myself) Used a sawsall VERY carefully to trim em down.  ::)

Thanks for the replies.  Hey 8pack, do you have any pics of your car with that rim and tire set up?

Ill try to get you pics.......I recommend the 4 inch backspace though.....but 3 3/4 should work......

On my car (72 Challenger) stock e body axel width wth the centerlines 8 inch with 4 backspace 275/60/15's fit easily ...  it is 1 3/4 to the inside of the wheelwell lip
from the sidewall and from the inside sidewall it is 1 1/2 to the spring..(stock location of the spring).....you should have at least 3/4 inch on each side as you can see i have plenty.....

hope this helps.....

Check specs on tire widths you are going width....all vary...I seen 275/60/15's come up different from each mfg......
Sec width of mine are 11.1(raised white lettering are a tad wider!!)  and tread of 9.1...........remember on an 8 inch rim......
