Vanishing Point
« on: January 09, 2010 - 07:04:27 PM »
VP is on Cinemax right now, so I'm watching it for the umpteenth time...

Did you ever notice that when Barry Newman (the cameraman, actually) is checking the side mirror, it doesn't look anything like an e-body mirror? It's kinda square with radiused corners.  :clueless:

Yup. For whatever reason the mirror on the car is a cheap aftermarket. Kinda weird considering when the movie was made the cars were practically new.

My theory is that of the original cars used, they had different factory outside mirrors. Three would have been available, std. chrome or the racing style in chrome or painted.

By using whatever was available, they could make the cars 'match' on the outside.

If you look close, you will see the steering wheels & seat upholstery change.

I/WE are so addicted to this movie me and some friends got together and did the rout last fall, people came from the U.K ,Ireland,

the movie is a little time capsule,

after the trip we watched it again and now this movie is one of my all time favorites despite all its flaws,
one of the many flaws is a very short scene where editing flipped the film and it actually shows him driving on the right hand side of the car on i 70 in the colo mountains lol

Notice the Challenger in the poster has a '71 grille air-brushed in?

The film was made in 1970 but came out in 1971. That was when the posters and soundtrack album were made too. So I would imagine that Chrysler would insist on them showing their NEW 1971 model in the artwork.

Drewcrane - Thanks for all the hard work you put into our VP road trip. It was a blast and I hope we can do it again in 2011. You did a good job on finding the film locations etc.

Oh and for trying to scare the poop out of us with that high speed - late braking thing on that highway off ramp with one rear disc brake failing. That was...an interesting few seconds. Pat went very quiet. :grinno:
