I have a couple points of interest as in earlier posts . vp tanked when first introduced .The second release did much better so when the movie posters came out the second time all they had at hand was a 71 challenger for the poster this also shows up in the original press order books ,I have all the promo art from both 70 and 71 releases .the goofy door mirror was as the car was purchased not an uncomon option . I was lucky to see the cars up on federal blvd when i was ten .GB

The mirror was not an option on Challengers. I am not even sure if it is even a Chrysler mirror.

The movie was released in the USA on 13th March 1971. Not 1970. It was a British production/American studio deal.
Chrysler lend cars to promote their products. They would insist on promoting their new 1971 model.

The earliest you could have seen the film was Jan 15th 1971 when there was a limited release for preview.

I think it was probably around 1974 when i saw it the first time. I stopped going to school in my early teens due to problems i was having there. The movies was a good way to keep warm or just pass the time until it was safe to go home.

I didnt say the movie came out in 70  I said the posters were different because the cars were gone and as for the mirrors im going on the fact that i have possesed challengers with this mirror and one barracuda  , also i didnt care or remember the mirror when i saw the cars as a kid they were just cars back then I was with my uncle at an englewood dealership were he worked when one was on the lot reason i dont know just older people talking about this car  we looked at two togeather up on federal when filming thats all i remember Its no bs but a 10 year olds memory about an ordeal that didnt hold much value then or today .GB

shows the only optional driver's side mirror style for 1970 E-Bodies.

The standard mirror was round with no remote.

I would like to see a less fuzzy pic like the one quapman posted , the one you linked is common but i have had an oval non remote style thats more basic kinda like a b body ball pivot style the challengers i had were very basic . the one i see in quapmans pic looks tough but kinda looks rectangle and could be odd but on my screen it looks like the oval style i have had .GB

The mirror on the VP cars looks more like the square mirror used on some Chevelles and Camaros. Also kinda looks like the cheap aftermarket you can buy at about any parts store.

i think its amazing all this talk over a mirror,that some body probably broke off at some time during production and they just stuck one on so they had a mirror,

in Austin Nevada we ran in to the mayor and he was around for the filming and his dad owned a service station in town and they did some of the work on the cars, he said they beat the crap out of all the cars, and even in the the interview with the director he was worried about there budget since they were crashing cars and raising the cost , so a cheap mirror was probably in order , im sure a replace ment was either not around or to expensive , remember they crashed an old cramero instead of a new chally

More than likely the mirror used provided a larger surface area than the Challenger mirror making driver's point of view filming easier.
