E Body 4 speeds!
« on: January 10, 2010 - 10:32:44 AM »
Hello! Can somone set the record straight for me on the whole e body 4 speed transmission being different from other 4 speeds  :clueless:. I heard that the e body 4 speed transmissions were different some how. I am looking for a small block 4 speed tranny, for my challenger, but I'm not sure if most mopar small block 4 speeds will work or not. Or if I just need a small block bell housing. Thanks in advance for any help. This site is the best!

In short the e-body trans has the shifter mount on the tail shaft b and a bodys mount further up on the case.

Big and small block are basically the same just need the correct bell housing.

Here is a couple shots of the tail shafts.
The one's with only one mount are for a 69. 70 went to two mounts.

Would the housing be the same on a 3 speed ebody transmission?

Feel free to call me ignorant, but are the two similar ones B-body?

I never noticed that the mount pad location was different on the pre-70 trannies. The body mount, not the shifter mount.

If my memory is right these were 69 B-body trans.

Are the 71-74 B bodies the same arrangement as the E body?

A short tailshaft with one shifter mount is for an A body, a longer one is a B body and the dual is a '70 up B/E body. since the E body didn't exist there was no need for the dual mount until 1970, so yes the dual mount with fit any 68' up B or E body though you'd have to modify or replace the 68-69 B body crossmember.

The mount location changed in '70 so the crossmember would be the same for a 4spd or auto I'm told.

the early b Body tranny had the mount in a different location from the later dual shifter mount tailshaft requiring a different crossmember in the early trannys , the later ones share the same mount location as the auto tranny so the crossmember is the same for both
