My 14" Road Wheels are 5.5" wide ( I believe this is standard)... I have ran 235/60 on the rear with no problems but this is not ideal ... here is a pic of the crown compared to a 245 on a 9" rim

 I put several sizes in this calculator & 225 /70R14 is the largest that fits in specs of a 5.5 wheel
                   235 /60 looks much better,,,,,,might be time to consider a wheel change

why does it crown so much? i just want more meat in the rear.

narrow rim pulling in on the sides, the weight of the car does smash em down so you do get more traction.

just trying to keep the factory wheels...how bad will the 235/60 be when on the car as far as crown goes? will the tire wear faster?

Due to the crown, the middle of the tread will wear faster than the edges will.

Ideally you want a rim the width of the tread.

True but I don't think the tire wares out any faster just the outer edges won't wear much.
  When I got my car in '75 it had H-70s, about a 235, and this was what I observed.
