Best degreaser?
« on: January 16, 2010 - 06:00:07 PM »
I have my whole suspension out including the steering box and let me tell ya,m lots of grease and crud,.,.,caked on from almost 40 years.

I want to clean up the k-member and all the parts....the k memeber is still on the car.....

Was thinking oven cleaner or just some sort of heavy duty degreaser....what do you guys recommend for fast and easy grease cutting?  Looking for fast and easy.....but I am sure it will be a real PITA.  LOL

I always end up using mineral spirits..a scraper then a wire brush...found a hand cleaner,Fast Orange, is good for the final clean.

For fast I use solvent followed by brake cleaner or acetone. and yes...lots of elbow grease.   If the parts can be submerged I have had excellent results using industrial strength floor cleaner, like used by restaurants, etc.

I've had good luck on unpainted metal parts with a first application of engine degreaser (then scrub/rinse) followed by oven cleaner (which will ruin paint).  The engine degreaser gets off the easy stuff so the oven cleaner works better at the harder stuff.

One the dirt is off, if its still a little greasy/oily brake cleaner will work well.

Castrol Super Clean really didn't work that well on my '71s parts... maybe its all that antique grease and dirt underneath ;)

For smaller parts...Simple Green or Castrol Super Clean in a crock pot.  Bring to boil and leave the room.  Come back in an hour.

Big stuff...

Thanks michele...

You know, I had bought some of that stuff for the bathtub a while back and have since used it up.....but it worked pretty good....hadnt thought of it!  Maybe I will pick up some more....would you say its better than the super clean stuff?  I got some of that (though its another brand) and it works OK but not fantastic.

Right now, the biggest chore I am looking at is degreasing and cleaning up where the steering box was (caked on grease and grime) and the k member in general...engine is in and the car is in my garage so it has to work with as little water as possible since I am indoors......if the car were outside I could have pressure washed it...wish I had thought of this prior to ripping it apart.... :banghead:

In my professional shop, I use a product called Oil Eater. It is very good, and can be used straight for tough jobs, or diluted as much as 10:1 for light cleaning. It rocks, and mine comes from O'Reilly's.

shandango, I was in the same situation a couple of years ago & decided to take the K-frame off with the drive train in the car...only 6-bolts away.  Finding a way to support the engine is the only hurdle.. I was able to use a come-along from the ceiling since my hood was off, another way would be to support from underneath.  Cleaning & painting would be a whooooole lot easier off the car...Just Sayin

Lay down a ring of sandbags to contain the water and clean like you need to.  If you've got one of those small "kid" pools, they work great for catching everything...just take the extra time to clean it right before you let junior use it this summer.
