Manual Vs. Power Rack'n'Pinion?
« on: January 19, 2010 - 12:07:27 AM »
Anyone using a manual rack and pinion set up?
The Power R&P unit I have has a major clearance issue on my CAP k frame (its mashing against my oil pump/ filter) - my choices are modification of the set up or go to manual R&P and avoid major changes, and further headaches.
Is there a big difference between the two? My car will be driven mostly on the street.
My 'Cuda will be running a 440 with 13" rotors and 17x8 - 245/40 rim and tire combo.

I have a manual rack set-up.With a 340.17's 245,going 275. It's hard to steer with big rubber up front. The more they wear,The harder it is to steer at slow speeds.Manual rack is more of a lightweight drag racing thing. There is more bump steer with a manual rack.(so i've been told) But the road feel at speed is nice.I just replaced the front tires and it made a big difference in ease of turning. It's very predictable.I couldn't afford the power unit at the time. But am considering it someday. It's a pain to parallel park.Or tight slow turns. You have to rock back and forth to make it easier.I must admit,I get tired after a canyon thrashing. But I'm no wussy either.

Thanks for the input -that seems to be the general concencious. Since my power rack just will not work, I have no choice but to go manual (its a Flaming River Mustang II), because I don't want to put the massive factory stuff back in. I just want to feel like i've made the correct choice, when really I have no choice.

Do you have pix of your car, and set up. What size tires and rims you running on the back?

Yup.   Mine is a FR MII unit.   Here's a pic er two.   It's an RMS set-up front and rear. 17X9 (275's rear)  17x8 (245's front)  I'm about to get 305/315's out back,275's up front. On some 18's I got. You could check my resto thread for some other pics.

Thanks so much for those shots. I have gone through your thread sometime ago, I just did not realise this was your car. Awesome set up.

Rack swapping sounds like a FOX reality show.

Sounds like it would work for both of you.

MMMMMM........rackswapping........sounds distasteful.
Im completely redoing  a 70 challenger 3 speed with a FI Tower of Power (Im sick I know :puke:), to me it looks like there would be no clearance issues with a 6 would it, power or manual? Can you use a Sagiaw pump or which pump does that use?
Yes, I am trying to build a car that no one wants to build. With a/c.
......I'm sorry, I must have I drifted off.....Please continue.

Yes, I am trying to build a car that no one wants to build. With a/c.

The only clearance issue with a power r&P seems to be with a big block. The worm gear is to high and smashes into the oil filter - a oil filter relocation kit could do the trick. All else should be fine.
