**More problems Popping Noise from the Brakes or Rear.
« on: January 20, 2010 - 05:05:11 PM »
Binding..Popping, Seems to be coming from the wheels/brakes. Not as bad if I hold the brakes on.
I first observed this a month ago one cold night when I moved the car from the cave to the house garage, after I got on the concrete it felt as if I was backing over something. Got out to check & found nothing so I continued on, one loud pop and a jerk & on we went till I started to turn about 10' later & all kinds of groaning & popping so I get a flashlight to see if something was hung up..nothing observed.  Over the last few days I had her up on jackstands , pulled the rear drums & all looks good, just a little surface rust from sitting. Rotated the wheels by hand & observed no binding of any kind so I ran the car on the stands & heard nothing unusual.
Today backing the car out after abut 10' POP, went a little farther POP went forward & backward holding the brake on & had no issue until I tried to turn the car when the front acted like we were in gravel, kinda skidding & POP but this from the Right front. & it did not matter if I held the brake on or not.... Once more backing up & the rear POPPED, each time there is a sensation of being held back.
A year or so ago I could move the car & had none of these issues, since then I had the rear end apart to install a limited slip diff but the brakes had already been done.

    Opinions?   Please  :1zhelp:

Backing up and turning with a Sure Grip can cause driveshaft/u-joint popping.  If you have a Sure Grip you could try the additive and also check for loose u-joints/ trans yoke.

The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

Wade, did you put sure grip additive to the unit?   Is the trans mount bolted down?  It doesnt do it on the stand when in gear?  Did you pulle the brake drums and run it in gear and look to see if the flanges  were turning without a wobble?  Im home soon if you need any help

tranny secure & no problems on stands...did not run with drums off.

looking forward to your return Alan....when do you want to swap in your stroker?

Try rechecking the brakes, if there is any oil residue in the drum or on the shoes it will make all kinds of noise. You may have a leaking axle seal.

Backing is also when the drum brake adjusters make their adjustments, if the adjusters are rusty they could be binding and releasing. Probably not, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I had a similar situation on a 77 LTD i used to own. Turned out to be the front pads.

Think so but I'll see what I can ....Sounding like the additive may be the cure...gotta do that sooner or later anyway.

Alan, you must be psychic... While I don't think loose U-bolts were the issue they were not tight to spec, coulda swore I had torqued those down but obviously hadn't. And remember that tranny mount you showed me?  Think mine is toast as there is a definite shudder & noise when going from forward to reverse.
Anyways  :woohoo: it appears the problem is solved, I put additive in the rear & ran it a while on jack stands, when I backed out I heard one or two pops but nothing like before, was able to turn the car without a hint of an issue.  Ran the car up  & down the driveway several times with no issues... I was testing out hoods carb also ...here's a video

  Thanks Guys.... Cuda-Challenger ROCKS :woo:

Well i'm glad the car is finally getting closer for its first cruise around the block. You have been putting some long hours in on it.  If you want this spare mount I have, you can have it. Or if you need anything else, give me a shout
