Need 2 front door panel inserts
« on: January 23, 2010 - 07:04:48 AM »
Looking for the door inserts that go in the front door panels.
Condition of woodgrain decal not important, I'm going to change to a simulated carbon fiber decal.

Thx

I just did that to my inserts, and the lower dash. I think I have a third set stored away. If I do you can have them just for the shipping, but from North/Western Ontario, it may not be cheap - but I'll check.
Have you done the dash bezels already? If you did, who did you buy the overlay from?
DMT?

dodj Your PM box is full:

I haven't bought the overlay kit yet.  There's a guy on ebay that sells an entire kit and DMT that sells it piecemeal.
I'm not sure what route I'm going to take.  Do you have any pics of want you did?

I'm interested in the panels if you can find them, let me know what shipping to FL 32904 would be.

Thx

I found the panels. I'm going over the border to Minnesota to pick up some parts one day this week so I can send it from there. It'll be cheaper, no extra border charges. I emptied my PM box, so send me your address and they'll be on their way. Seeing as I have to drive over to MN, I can't get you a shipping price ahead of time but you could include a max shipping $ in your PM? I figure it will probably be $8-$10.
Here's how my inserts turned out

Looks great!  That's exactly what I'd like to do.  You'll have to give me some pointers/details.

Thx

1/ File the 3 spots on the backside of the insert so you can tap out the three pointed thingy.
2/ To remove the original woodgrain material, I first soaked it with windex. The insert has a bit of a curve in it and will hold a bit of a puddle.(tape the 3 holes from the thingy you removed) After about an hour I took the utility blade and pulled up one corner of the material. Then slowly worked the utility blade under the woodgrain while pulling on it.
3/ After the woodgrain is removed, I masked off the chrome border and sprayed "gunmetal grey" acrylic paint around the outside.
4/ Then I laid the self adhesive carbon fiber decal on the insert and squeegeed the decal tight into the outlining chrome and carefully trimmed with an x-acto knife.
Hope this helps Katfish, and thanks for the tip :smokin:

I'm looking forward to the parts arriving.  Thx for the help!

How did you put the "thingy" back on?  I thought it would just have nuts like the insert itself?

The triangle thing just has peened over studs that need to be filed off. To remount after you do the decal, i put a drop of crazy glue on each stud from the backside.
