cheapest route....convert to a833 or buy new 727..
« on: January 24, 2010 - 11:33:18 AM »
Hello, Just discovered that my dads 727 from his 340 will not work in my 440 challenger...I have seen aftermarket 727's for around 1,000.  could I switch over to an a833 4 speed and be anywhere near that price?  Is there any aftermarket companies that sell the 4 speed?  thanks guys.

Not likely.  The parts alone will most likely run you $1,500+ for the swap.  However, I'm certainly not saying not to do it.  It will definitely cost you more, but in the end, what do you want?  I bit the bullet and did the 4 speed swap when we put in our 440 several years ago, and have absolutely no regrets.

By chance you don't live close to Missouri?   We have a member that could build you the mother of all 727s for a grand, but he's peculiar...won't ship, will only put his work in a car he can test & adjust.     What's wrong with yours anyway?

It looks like the 727 he thought he could use is a small block 727 off of his dad's 340.

If you plan on doing the 5-speed conversion in another year, why put the $1K+ into a new 727 now, why not just do the 5 speed now?  Is this a motor you plan on swapping in with the transmission or is the car not running and you are just looking for the quickest way to get it on the road

I actually live in NY.  My 727 slips in all gears now....going down the road in 3rd, it acts as if its in neutral...real bad now.

Well, I would love to do the 5 speed now, but I cant swing the $4500+ right now, and I dont want to have a summer car sitting in my garage all summer while my friends go to cruise ins and all.
