Vin Tag rivets
« on: January 26, 2010 - 07:51:12 PM »
OK guys, this has probably been asked before, but here goes.
I am looking at getting the dash on the Challenger recovered and I would like to put the vin tag back on with the original rivets. I havent removed the vin tag as yet.
Has anyone managed to save and reuse the original rivets, or is there somewhere or someone that sells the original rivets as new or NOS.
Thanks  :nzflag:

Justdashes said to drill them out from the bottom and then glue them back on after I got the dash back.
Someone else said to drill them out just a little and use a new rivet center to re install it.

I scored some nos ones several years back but I guess they are illegal or something.  :dunno: to sale.  :clueless:

I think ECS sells VIN rivets but I may be wrong.  I know I've seen them advertised quite a bit.  I don't think it is illegal to sell a rivet.

I'm planning on just grinding the back off of my origonal rivets and gluing the tag back on.

Drill it out from the backside without going all the way thru. Then epoxy the rivets in with the tag.

Wow,  :22yikes: $50 a pair is unbelieveable. Is that the only place that sells the rivets.
At the US - NZ dollar exchange rate conversion, thats $72.  :walkaway: plus freight.
I think I might try and save the original rivets.

With a lot of patience, the old ones can be re-used WHOLE.

(A talented person could make new ones from regular steel rivets.)

Pop the centers out the bottom through the rivet holes with a new pop-rivet or punch.

From the back side, squeeze the rivets with pliers until they are small enough to go through the holes in the pad. They are steel, so it's not easy. You'll probably have to push them through the pad with a punch. They will likely stay on the VIN tag. Squeeze a little more so that they come out of the tag easily.

Squeeze a little more so that they'll pass through the tag and new pad easily. You could leave them in the tag if they go through the new pad OK.

Take the "nail" out of a new rivet and slide it up through the old one. The old rivet center hole might be tight now, so you might have to tap it through with a small hammer.

Install the old rivet just like a new one using a rivet gun. *

Done.

Did I mention the need for a LOT of patience?

I believe it IS illegal to sell rosette-head rivets in Michigan. Ask Hank. Other states have various laws concerning these rivets and VIN tags. As a general rule, as long as you're handling these items for use in your own vehicle (I.E. pad replacement), you should be OK.

From MCG magazine-repro vin rivets $45/pr 603-209-1678

I ground off the back of the rivettes and glued them back on but now I`m afraid of someone trying to steal it by just popping it offf at a car show so I may try and re-rivet them or just buy some new ones.

I just got some standard 1/8" x 1/2" round rivets, drank a beer and filed the 6 sides on to the rivet (using a scotchbrite wheel), painted them semi-gloss black. Went through about a dozen rivets to get it right. Local Dodge owners think they look cool and could not tell the difference. Cost 2c. My advice to the non-concours people - don't get too anal about these things.

Thanks for the input guys.
Quapmans idea sounds like the way to go to start with. Think I might try and save the originals first.
