71 340 cuda with 727, correct rear end?
« on: January 29, 2010 - 04:17:40 PM »
I know all 1971 340 'cudas had 727's but what about rear ends, were they all
dana' 8 1/4 ,8 3/4, or somthing different is there a fail safe or a rear-end not recommended to install, and is there a way to tell if all orginal parts are gone?

It could be any of the options because the rear axle was an option.  Look at your fender tag that will get you in the right direction.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I have never seen a 340 ebody with anything other than a 8 3/4 from the factory.  /6 and 318's had the smaller rears, and never saw a dana 60 on a 340 e body.

In 1970 and 1971, the shaker hood and the Spicer-built Dana 60 rear axle were available. The shaker hood was available with 340, 383, 440-4bbl and 440-6bbl, and 426 Hemi engines. The heavy-duty (and heavy) Dana 60, with a 9¾ in ring gear, was standard equipment with manual transmissions and 440-6bbl and 426 Hemi engines, and was optional on those with the automatic transmission.

By the 1971 model year, the factory supercar had fully evolved from the bare-bones Super Stocks of the early '60s into highly refined luxury machines. The engines were larger then those first 413s, but so were the bodies. It was now possible to order a large number of additional option packages, ranging from exterior trim to Super Trak Pak drivelines. Below is an alphabetic list of what could be had when you were ready to order that new Hemi 'Cuda, Charger Super Bee, or Demon 340 thirty years ago.

If the dealer or the customer wanted something different it could have been if the  :money: was right. Ok what is the difference in A31 and A36 axles?  They were both available for the 340.

a31 was available on 70 to 71  with the 340 or 383 4 bbl ,package included 3.91 rear axle with sure grip an a 7 blade fan,the maximum cool radiator and hemi suspension

a36 was the only package to survive after 71 .it was available only for cars with a 4 bbl,it included 3.55 axle with a sure grip,,heavy duty cooling and heavy duty suspension
