Can this bent wheel be repaired?
« on: January 31, 2010 - 06:42:39 PM »
I was out on my second drive since putting on these new torque thrusts and a guy towing a boat started crossing the yellow line, so I swerved to the edge of the road and hit a sharp pothole.
Bang! :swear: :stomp:
Anyways, it wouldnt hold air, so after installing my old wheel to get it home, I hope a local wheel repair place can fix it for a lot less than the $240 it cost me for a new one.
Anyone ever heard of Turbax? I hear they do magic on bent and broken wheels.

Oh man that sucks!
I have the same rims, just mounted the new tires and found a crack in the weld. I now am waiting for a new one which is on back order.
I hope you have some luck with the fix.

Yes, it can be fixed. I have seen worse. It may crack when they straighten it, they weld it and turn it back down, then polish and clear coat it. You will never know the dmaage was there unless you have the tire off and even then may be hard to detect depending on how good a shop they are.

Gosh, if a bump in the road did that, I think I would want a better/ tougher rim myself. Thats scary. Glad you weren't hurt :2thumbs:

it was a nasty sharp hole on the edge of the asphalt. It was so loud I thought it did more damage. Hopefully the wheel is all it bent.
Did some research and there is a local company called turbax that all the body shops use. Hopefully I'll have it back good as new before the end of the week. They pickup and deliver, tire and all, and remount and balance the tire too. Should cost less than a new wheel.

Should be an easy fix. You will be able to see the repair since it looks to be a chrome rim, but at least it is on the inside. Expect to pay under $150 for the repair. We do numerous reapirs at the dealership bodyshop daily. Some of the wheels before the repair look totally unsaveable with chunks missing, but they get fixed. use a reputeable shop to do the repair as there are some hacks out there with just a torch and hammer and it is your life on the line.

its a brand new torque thrust and I dropped it off today for repair. it should be done by thursday.
Its aluminum, as I expect most custom wheels are, but are they typically some aluminum alloy? I know the old mag wheels were made with magnesium, but that isnt a popular material anymore. Is it because they burn so hot? or just that there are better alloys out there now?
These torgue thrusts, maybe because of their design, and the openness of the wheel, might be weak and prone to rim bending.
Hope I'm wrong, but its been a long time since Ive bent a rim, and it just seems most of the oem type alloy wheels look stronger.

It's an alloy, plain aluminium doesn't have the strength needed for rims.

I think they got away from magnesium because it was kind of brittle.  :2cents:

The better repairers actually roll out dents out and only weld when necessary.   :2thumbs:
Magnesium wheels were called that but weren't made from magnesium because it burns when exposed to water. Old high school experiment, as said before they are Alum. alloy.
