Man that's horrible, but you know a lot of people freeze up in scary situations and don't think straight.
Yes that recording is suposed to be true, the unbeliveable part was the driver was a Califonia Highway Patrol Officer! I wouldve thought he couldve figured it out and put the car in neutral. :dunno:
One of the other major accidents, the Toyota was out of control for 20 miles! :faint:
I know this is very serious but really,20 miles?

:'( Radio station here in st paul played a 911 call 2 days ago from a toyota driver that the accel pedal was stuck frantic and didn't know what to do ,panicking and said a intersection was coming up,next thing phone went dead and they anounced all four people were killed.real sad,got sick to my stomach after hearing that played back.............

Holy!!! think that was real or a spoof...if real thats some crazy story!

It's not a spoof - it was real and I knew the driver personally.  His name was Mark Saylor and he was our local CHP school bus safety officer, a 20 year veteran of the force and a former Air Force enlisted man.  In the car with him were his wife, 12 year old daughter and his wife's younger brother, who was the one on the phone.  I attended their memorial service - it brings a lump to my throat thinking about it now.

They were in a loaner 2009 Lexus ES350 they had just picked up from the dealership - his was in the shop for service - and the investigation said it was the floor mats that caught the accelerator.  He was unfamiliar with the car, which had the keyless ignition, so may not have known how to shut it off.  He was on a three-mile long 5% downgrade that ended in a T-intersection.  Witnesses said the front brakes were on fire when they went through the intersection at about 120 mph, the car flew about 200 feet and then rolled before bursting into flame.  The coroners report said they all died on impact.

Don't sweat it.  I appreciate the sentiment, but he was more a professional acquaintance than anything else.  I liked the man and attended the memorial as much to represent our professional community (student transportation) as well as out of respect to the man and his family.  From the testimonials, he and his family were all well-liked and very respected by their friends, family and co-workers.  :'(

We had an accident here in Dallas over the Christmas Holiday where 4 people died when their Camry went through a T intersection and flipped upside down into a pond.  I never heard the cause of the accident, but their floor mats were found in the trunk.  It was not long after that accident that the next round of recalls came out where they started fingering the accelerator pedal itself.

The American Company (CTS of Elkhart, Ind.) that supplies some Toyota models with the gas pedal in question also supplies the same gas pedal to Honda, Ford, GM and Chrysler.

I immediately think of the Vibe - a Toyota with Pontiac badging...why aren't the domestics with the same gas pedals doing a well-publicized recall?

I guess they don't have to because they are owned by us, thanks to the bailout!

Who says they are the same part? Might be made by the same manufacturer, but not the same part. I dont know this for certain, but it's a good possibility. Vendors often make several different versions of assemblies to fit the specifications of that particular manufacturer. Toyota puts out a spec, asks for bids and awards a contract to the winner of the bidding.

Wow, that is horrible. Condolences and RIP to the family. That would have to be a scary way to die. With a 3 mile straight you would think the guy would have time to get over his initial panic and put the thing in neutral. Let the engine blow up if it came to that but why ride that death trap all the way out? It doesnt make sense to me.

You are probably right.

One thing is certain though, All of this is a field day for Lawyers. Attorneys made fortunes in the "unsafe at any speed" Corvair, "exploding" Pinto and rollover Ford Explorer cases. These could pale in significance compared to scale of Toyota's recall. A Consumer Reports study indicated that, for the model year 2008, there were 52 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration against Toyota for Sudden Unattended Acceleration The publicity over 52 complaints out of 1.8 million Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2008 has made every owner concerned about the safety of their Toyota vehicle.

This panic could fuel lawsuits big enough to put Toyota out of business in the U.S. What a boon for Government Motors! Indeed, last Friday, GM, Chrysler and Ford all announced ad campaigns aimed at worried Toyota owners.

OMG  that is so sad to hear of those poor people  :( My condolences to the family and friends  :angelwings: This isn't good news for Toyota. Never been a fan of riceburners my brother used to own a 84 Toyota truck that he bought new. The engine blew up at just at 100,000 miles on it and always had trasmission problems since it was new. Besides i work at a parts store and NOTHINGS cheap when its time to repair the things and most parts are hard to get anyways.

Here in   :aussie:  toyota have just issued a recall on a "small" number of Prius's, the report said that they were aware of the problem and it has been rectified.    :violin:
About a month ago here in outer Melbourne a fraud voyager had a problem with the cruise control, the driver set it at 100 klm and it stayed engaged. He drove under Police escort for 1/2 hour until he ran out of freeway. This was all played live on TV. The brakes burnt up, he couldn't knock it out of drive or turn off the ignition. The Police couldn't find a problem, his insurance won't cover him and there is a problem with the fraud motor company, the owner doesn't want to give it back to them.    :horse:

Several years ago I finally figured out that these quality/warranty numbers are heavily swayed by peoples perceptions.  The Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport were the exact same vehicle (other than badges), yet the Isuzu had twice as many JDPower problems as the Honda.  I don't think all those problems were the badges.

Along with the privately owned cars, new cars on the dealer lots, wonder how many more are sitting around the country at airports/car rental places. Another hit to employment in this country, don't know how many assembly plants are located here but if they aren't selling them that will mean more layoffs and higher unemployment rates. How soon till government steps in with some $$$$$$$$$$ ? After all they just yesterday voted to approve increased level for national spending, this after approving an over trillon dollar 2010 budget.  :pullinghair:
