Steering Wheel Color
« on: September 16, 2004 - 08:24:53 PM »
I have a 71 Challenger.  I dont have any build sheets but Im trying to get a 3 spoke wheel for the car, and the car has a Brite Blue interior. (H6B5)  My question is would the spokes and/or the horn button be colored blue too, or just black?  The steering column is black.  Theres a Tuff wheel on there now which I know is not original, so I want to put the 3 spoke on, just not sure about the coloring...Thanks for any replies!

Either call Year One(they carry Mopaints) or Mopaints. Ron has got all the orignally int colors for these.

Take a look at link http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?cat=1

Hope this helps

I found out that Tuff wheels WERE available as an option, of course, on 70-71 e bodies!  I think I'll have it resto'ed, and put it back on, it might just be original, and the steering column is black too, although I dont have a build sheet to prove that it is original, but I think so because nothing was really done as far as modifications are concerned, so I'll leave it!  Cheaper than buying and having a 3 spoke resto'ed!

Well, according to a book I recently purchased titled "Original Challenger and Barracuda, 1970-1974, The Restorer's Guide", by Jim Schild, 2003, 1st printing.  It states in chapters for 1970 cars that the optional Tuff Wheel, code S84 was available, page 36, and in the 1971 chapter he also states that an optional S84 Tuff Wheel was available, a 14.5 inch diameter wheel with a foam and vinyl covered rim with a padded horn button, page 75.  Also on page 73, there are two pictures of 71 Challenger R/T interiors with Tuff Wheels on the column.  Now whether it was only a R/T option, I don't know.  I dont have an R/T, just a JH plain Challenger, but who really knows?  My car has alot of options, so maybe it was ordered when new, the wheel looks it!  I don't have a build sheet, and my engine is not original, so at this point Im not gonna co crazy as far as having the car exactly as when it was new.  I'll try to make it look as close as possible, but for the wheel, I'll leave it then.  I'll take the benefit of the doubt that since it was offered, allegedly, I'll assume the car came with it.  I was going to find a restored 3 spoke, and then get the spokes and button to match the Brite Blue interior for 500+ dollars, but I think I'll keep the Tuff instead!!
