taking it easy on the highway my 440 in my chally gets 16mpg or so, but i have 3.23 gears and only a 600cfm carb. Im upgrading to an 850 this summer and i figure the milage will get cut in half. Rodding it around town (which is the majority of my miles) it gets about 5mpg

I highly doubt it , if the carb is a new modern one it may very well return the same or better milage when cruising , if you have a heavy right foot the milage will suffer  :smilielol:

Carl, just curious, is that converted to US gallons? Are NZ pumps in litres? Your numbers are really good too, guess I need to do some slowing down or work on the 318.

US Gallons but as I said, that's when I'm trying to save gas, so I guess it's not "real world". When I drive "normally" and not to save gas and get into it to overtake of have some fun it's around 14-15mpg. Still, not bad. My 440 is very very tame though. NZ pumps are in litres.

Challenger 440 six pack. 550hp.
Car weighs 4000lbs with driver.
Runs high 11s on the Quarter.
145mph top speed on the highway.

Gets an average of 11.5 miles to your US Gallon on the highway in its current tune.

About the same in gallons to the mile when floored in anger and something in between around town. :lol2:

sweet. i hope the gas mileage stays the same, that way i can afford to take it on long trips. That 5mpg around town sure empties the wallet pretty fast. And when im driving around town the right foot is quite heavy

Thanks everybody for your replies.  No real surprises, but it gives me an idea of what I can expect if I don't control my impulses to hop up the Barracuda more than carb, intake & exhaust which are my short-term goals for now.  It's interesting how some of the modern cars can have such high hp numbers and still routinely knock out mid to high 20's mpg on the highway.  I know these aren't light cars but neither are the previous generations of Camaros & Firebirds which I've owned both of and each routinely saw these kind of numbers with real world driving ....  I'm not going to totally sacrifice performance either, because the last thing I want is to be spanking by a Ford Taurus or Chevy Malibu!!

Thanks again, Jim

Cannot compare todays plastic computor controlled cars with our real cars, so many changes in engine design, cam profile, EFI lean fuel systems etc, Even the aerodynamics of the plastic cars plays a part in economy. Load up a new car, that is add some weight and watch the mileage figure change.

A Gear Vendors Gear Splitter is in my long-term plans for both of my Mopars.  Supposed to be good for 25-30% reduction in rpms.  I'm thinking either a 3.55 or 3.91 rear gear for the Barracuda before OD, 4.10 or 4.30 for the Roadrunner.  Both should be decent on the road when the splitter / OD is engaged.

my 440-6 with 3.54 rear gets about 6mpg around town, and about 9 to 10 on the highway.
My quad SRT-10 gets 9mpg city and 13 on the highway. My Jeep SRT got about 10 and 14.

yea i only put a few thousand miles a year on my car and it would take a LONG time for one of those overdrive units to pay for its self with only an increase of 2-4 mpg.

That OD would be nice  I'm running 3:55's and it is a compromise for both the highway and tighter backroads. Works well on the 55 mph label curves though.

BTW, 14.5 mpg average with the 340. A Chrysler .484 purple cam, and 650 DP headers ect... Not too bad considering.

Lowering the cruising rpm won't necessarily give a huge jump in mileage because it could put your cruise rpm below a usable torque value.

Remember, the torque peak is exactly the same as the volumetric efficiency peak.

Is that like not being on the cam HP? I find the motor seems to free up when everything is in sync. RPM, speed, and load.
