a833 rear seal question and picture
« on: February 10, 2010 - 08:26:46 PM »
I have a leaky rear tranny seal (its throwing oil all over down there, makes for a great rust preventer!) and am about to order a new "output shaft" seal from year one, but I know the one that is leaking is relatively new, plus the yolk shaft seems slightly loose/sloppy. Is there another inner seal or bearing of some kind that may need replacing also?
Thanks.

there is an inner tail shaft bushing, and on the seal, there is a tiny hole for air vent in the cup. Did you install that up or down

a bushing, thought so. It might be worn.
I see the hole in the year one picture, but will have to check on mine. I assume it should be up, and it probably is or I would have noticed it.
Thanks. Now I have to find the bushing. Is there another name for it I should search?
Think I found it. Is it the case extension mainshaft bushing?

I found it easy to install on the bench. In the car.... might not be so easy. :swear:

Here is a tip: I made this up and it fits the seal and work's perfect on all Mopar transmissions, just go to home depot or lowes and pick these up...

Install in or out of the car, easy as pie...

I would also check the slip yoke to see if that is also not worn.
Al if the seal has a dust shield extension I have always put the hole down and always put a smear of grease inside the lip, we had a few over here that squeaked or squealed if dry.

but how would you remove the old bushing? That sounds not so easy

I was going to buy the toool 2 years ago , it reaches inside the trans & grabs the bushing , you just thread the center shaft in against the tail shaft to pull the bushing out

I had the tail shaft housing removed for other reasons, then cut thru one side of the bushing with hacksaw blade.  Bushing tapped out without much fuss.
Brewers Performance also sells top quality new and used 4 speed parts.

I decided to ask a transmission guy I know (I personally collect his rent when he's late, which is often, recently) about replacing the bushing, and he swears the case needs to be dropped to remove the bushing.
But, I dont want him dropping it just so he can look for and claim it needs other repairs. You know the drill. I know the guy, but dont trust him that much. I've witnessed and heard from his neighbors about major "disagreements" with his customers, sometimes involving the police! But, he is knowledgable, or at least he should be after 25 years of running the shop.

I do probably need a new synchro for my 2nd gear, but dont want to tackle that now.
