I thought urethane in a caulk gun was the way to go. Not positive on this application though
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The highlights would be make sure the channel is clean, prime with appropriate butl primer. Then roll out the butl tape near the edge of the window channel. I like to make the over lap in the tape on the side with the tape positioned so the water runs down and not trapping it. If it is a used glass make sure the glass is clean so you can see when the glass is pushed down you can see the seal.
Set the lower bumpers, lay the glass in carefully and checking side to side gap.
Press lightly and even all around outside.
Then seal outer edges with the proper sealer for butl. don't use urethane to seal this area.
One hint also be sure you have installed good window trim clips before you put the glass in.

You can install with urethane also but be sure to make some blocks to keep the glass from setting too deep in the channel.
The molding will look bad if the glass is too deep.
And again don't seal the edges with it as it will make installing the moldings a real pain.
If it drys the clips will be anchored,if the moldings are installed while it is wet they are now glued in permanently.

Could be, but the factory/dealers filled the channel with caulking also. After 40 years they can be a bugger!

Another tip is to use the etching compound, available from most glass or autobody supply store, on the window surround. Makes the sealer stick and seal better especially on clearcoat paints.

I would ruff up the POR a little. 180 grit should do it and then use the primer.

Most any auto parts store that handles paint should have it.

The molding will look bad if the glass is too deep.

what determines the hight of the glass?

The thickness of the butl strip, I use 5/16 or 3/8 also.
If you use urethane I make small blocks to hold the glass up to the correct height. The urethane is very soft and the glass can settle too deep in the channel leaving a gap around the molding.

I can testify to the importance of checking the installed height before you go in with the sticky stuff - my DIY screen fit left a huge gap between the glass and the trim and I had to use shorty trim clips for a '67 Dart (I think) to get it looking anything like.

There's still a gap there but no one seems to notice so I'm living with it
