727 and Drive Line
« on: February 11, 2010 - 10:14:49 AM »
I went to put my drive shaft in the other day.  I started looking inside the yoke and noticed that there was an area where the teeth had a larger gtoove between the teeth.  So, I looked at my tail shaft (already in the car) and noticed that all the teeth are the same distance apart.  I looked at another tail shaft on another 727 and noticed the same thing.  2 Quetions:
1:  I have not measured my drive line to make sure it is the correct shaft, but do the yokes usually have a large groove set in the teeth?
2:  If there is no groove in the tail shaft, does this mean that the yoke can go on any which way?
Thanks.
Jason

That's a master spline. If you look closely at the output shaft you will probably see two splines that actually meet in a taper at the end of the shaft. This is where you would line up your master spline.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I think that is a carry over from the old ball & trunion which used to be bolted onto the back of the out put shaft.
Tactransman may chime in with the answer if my comment is not correct.

Thanks, I will look at the output shaft a little closer and see if I can see the taper.

Thanks!  SO it does not matter where that missing tooth goes?
