correct power disc brakes master cylinder - where to buy?
« on: February 11, 2010 - 04:35:09 PM »
My car has incorrect MC - 2 similar domes as for drum/drum brakes while I have a disc/drum combo w/power.
I looked at roseville, YO, ebay, NAPA etc and the only place that lists a look-a-like MC is jimsautoparts.com  :banghead:
http://www.jimsautoparts.com/brake.htm     BR-51511-R ($125)

YO NG90162 model is similar to raybestos at napa (MC36283) - both have the smaller reservoir cover rectangular in front.

Do you know any other source of this part other than jim's?

Hi Al, 70 challenger R/T, front disc, rear drums. As of now it looks like below on the left. Should be like the one @ hammtrackregistry webpage.

I just called my parts house.  A1 cardone  rebuilt for your 70 challenger with disc brakes is 31.99 plus tax.

Al & Willard I have several new master cylinders like this I purchased wholesale for my cars. Part numbers are 1515 (i think they were Bendix but the boxes are in bad shape, the cylinders are still ok), they are new aftermarket units. I'll let them go for $35 plus shipping.

Thanks CudaNut - the ones you have will fit but their shape is way off the correct one  :( (well, still better than the one I have now in the car :) )

Al, does the cardone a1 unit look like a correct (cast 2229171) part? I mean the casting shape and the smaller reservoir cover should have a curved front edge.

Willard, I worked in wholesale parts for 21 years prior to my current job, Bendix made the original units but few if any of the original cores are still left in the pipeline. The original "thermometer" style front unit commands top dollar on  :ebay: today. The same configuration (bore size, fitting size etc..) was made for several other vehicles and the rebuilders are interested in whether it fits, not if the unit is "accurate". You will get many different looks in a rebuilt box that fit and function the same. You might get lucky and get one of the originals but I recently opened about 10 at my former employer looking for one and didn't find any. Some looked like the one I posted and some looked like Al's and others were different than both of them...

Here is a picture of a 1970 original. 70 used a taller unit. 71 and up used the more common part.
This was removed from a 70 Cuda

Ok, so you thing that jimsautoparts lists something  they dont have??
Farmboy70 - that 1970 MC has orifices on the passenger side - shouldn't they be on the driver's side?

That was removed from a 70 Hemi Cuda, could be the difference.

Occasionally you can pick up an original on eBay but the 2229171 isn't cheap.  I got two off of eBay in the last year, one was just a good core that needs to be rebuilt (date code correct for one of my challys) and the other had already been rebuilt.  I think they were somewhere around $160 and $500 respectively.

Also, Raybestos sells a similar looking but noticeably smaller version that will work.  Bought one from Rockauto a while back.

Thanks for clearing this up. I'll wait to get a correct one as the one I have now was working flawlessly for last year.
