Shock selection help
« on: February 13, 2010 - 12:17:39 AM »
OK I was wondering for better handling, not track or drag racing what is a good shock to use on an a 70 cuda E body?

I need better handling and still want decent ride, but firm is OK.

Was looking at these...http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-33840/

Edelbrock Performer IAS Monotube Shocks (seems these are stiffer)  :ylsuper:
and
Edelbrock Classic IAS Shocks

anyone use these and can detail the diff in the 2 lines for me?

thanks!

They are the same thing. The only difference is the color, Performers are red, classics are gray.

I've got no personal experience with Ebrock shocks, but I've heard good feedback on them for street applications. Track use may be another story as they tend to fade with sustained aggressive driving.

Yes, mono-tube shocks may tend to feel a bit more firm than a comparable twin tube. This is because a mono-tube has more oil to move and as a result may have a higher resistance to motion. This also means that they have bigger discs internally are more sensitive to changes in velocity in their travel and can exert greater control over wheel motion. By contrast a twin tube is displacing less fluid and may feel smoother in its motion. Because it is a tube within a tube, they can still be function if the bod is damaged, where a mono tube will be junk.

Inexpensive and they claim some performance gain.

Havent tried them yet though.

I bought and installed the classic Edel IAS. There was a huge improvement in handling on the rough city streets. I replaced about 15yr old monroes so I think ANY shock would have been an improvement though.

LOL The shocks on my car were REALY REALY old...........made this funky squishy noise as you move them.....no resistance (barely) at all....so I agree, anything in my case will be better!

Funny thing though...the car rode "ok"........ :dunno:

I have the classic IAS shocks installed and love the ride. Nice and firm but smooth as hell, especially on the highway. When I push down on the rear end of the trunk to see how low the trunk goes, it's around 1-1/2" to 2" (max) with a good firm push, nice and tight. ;)

I have the Edlebrock red ones. The car handles bumpy corners and still stays on track. Some stiff cheap shocks will bounce you sideways in that situation. Of course you pay more to get more or vice versa.

Thanks guys for the feedback,

I was also looking at Koni's but they are more than 2 times the price and not sure how much better if any they would be.

I am leaning towards the performace Vs the classic Edelbrock mono's, I want to get better handling if they are the next notch up.

if you are willing to spend the money it is worth it to go a good pair of adjustable shocks,QA1 makes an affordable adj. shock, look in to them if you have the money

There is no difference between the two Edelbrocks, one is red, one is gray, that's all.

Yes, there is a noticeable enough difference between a Koni and an E-brock for the price. Koni's are a world class shock with engineering and construction to back them up. They will be the last shocks you ever buy because if you don't like the valving or if you ever think you wore them out, you send them back and they fix them. It is kind of the difference between buying a Rolex or buying a Fossil.

Thanks so much all, yep I had KYB fair not great, I just need to determine I guess if I am willing to spend the $$s for the Konis, but I think the eddies would be way better than what I have now.

I have used KYBs for many years and always thought they were OK for the money. And money has been very tight.

But while in the US I got to drive my buddys Challenger fitted with stock 383 suspension and QA1 adjustable shocks.

Put it this way. My KYBs are comming OFF asap and the QA1 shocks are on on their way from Summit.

Another mate of mine has just made the same swap on his B-body and he reports it is like driving a different car. They make a huge difference.

IMO, shocks are to the suspension what a camshaft is to the engine. They determine the whole operating range, feel, performance, and manners of the whole system.
